silly fears...is this really common?

Okay not sure where else to put this....but have you read a thread before and like a train wreck can't stop?

I just read 2 threads about snakes at WDW (complete with photos and some videos). Naive me never really thought about it but after reading about people finding snakes in their WDW hotel rooms (yes one was a 4th floor room at the Contemporary chilling out above the curtains) and the one that made me nervous was the child at CBR who stayed on the path but leaned over to pick up his toy only to be bitten 3 times by a water moccasin in the mulch. Snakes in the hotel pools, shops, parks, pathways, etc.

Okay I enjoy wdw but now I feel like I will be paranoid looking for them since I will have 2 inquisitiveyounger kids with me. Esp after posts that they are in the parks etc. Is this a frequent occurrence? The thought of checking the beds, room etc doesn't make me feel too great.

Please remind me that while they are all over in nature I'm just being paranoid bc I'm terrified of them. That they are really rare sightings.

I have been to Disney at least 25 times, and I have NEVER seen a snake in the parks. That said, we did see one last year in the brush near our timeshare pool last year.

Re: silly fears...is this really common?

OMG!!!! Are you on DIS boards???? Bc I read the same stuff before we went in January and I literally was freaking out!!! I have stayed in CRB in past and so know the paths they are speaking about and got so scared that could happen to DD. we stayed in AKL this time and was so nervous about them there too Bc of the nature of the resort.
I too would never think about this until I saw MULTIPLE threads on DIS. Then there's another whole thread about the gator in fontierland that just put me over the edge.

Forget about the bedbug scares...... It made me stop enjoying planning Bc I was reading too much of this stuff so I stopped.....
Then I said ... Ok..... Think about how many peoe go everyday and every year. And everything is FINE.

But I was a nervous wreck.

I have never heard of this. For some reason, it does not overly concern me. Now the bedbug thing...that freaks me out....but I still go. I just check and check the room and try to be cautious.

Yup. If you go on Dis Boards there's a lot on snakes. I made the mistake of reading it multiple times 2 weeks before we went.

I saw the boy pic years ago, the one that reached down on the path in the mulch. After that I told my kids no picking things up out of the bushes. We saw a snake at epcot last year just slithering around in the open near spaceship earth. We also saw one at the pool at Pop one year, and another at Ft. Wilderness Campground near the pool. So they are there! Just teach your kids to leave them alone, and no reaching into the bushes!

and we don't do ground floor rooms unless its interior corridors since mousekeeping doesn't shut the door completely

Totally agree. I'd never do a ground for room in an exterior corridor hotel.

The one that scared me was the 4th floor room at the Contemporary. Yup, not just IN the roombut up high on the curtain box.

I guess my big issue is not as much the snakes there in general but which ones do you worry are venemous and which ones are harmless. You can tell your kids no picking things up but in real like x drops his/her hat and before you can say wait don't pick that up they are reaching towards whatever. I don't know about you all but I would freak out if I was swimming and something started swimming with me. The ones that bothered me were not seeing them at a distance but hearing they were climbing a pillar by someones head, under a chair/bench person went to sit at, behind them on a wall they were leaning against. I guess I feel like I want to enjoy my trip and not be looking for snakes and spiders all week. Those are really the only 2 things that bother me. I guess also I have no idea which ones are the ones you really worry about. The comment that got me was if you get bit make sure to photograph it so you can tell the dr and they know what to give youChat Icon Chat Icon Guess more concerned about the kids than myself.

silly fears...is this really common?

We have seen a few snakes over the years....I really wasn't too worried about them and I am afraid of every single thing including ants lol. The are in the bushes and those little ponds that some of the resorts have. Just don't play in the bushes and you should be fine : ). As far as the one on the 4th floor. I really think that is an oddity and you know not to believe everything on the DIS boards. I find alot of people try to one up each other.

What bothers me more than the snakes are those little iguana things. Our last trip there was so many that DD kept stepping on them. It was disgusting.

Are you kidding?! The lizards are my DS favorite part! Lol. He could chase them around all day. He's actually really good at catching them. I have some great pictures of a lizard sitting on his shoulder. Chat Icon

Unfortunately that one was true saw the pics and a video. Thought I read it happened more than once. They were coming in via the air conditioningChat Icon

Yeah not I don't believe all of them but there were enough pics for me.

Lizards don't bother me at all. They are all over our local pool and my town in the warm weather. I actually enjoy watching them. It is the snakes and getting bitten that scary me. I lived in Nashville for 5 years and used to hike with the girl scouts. But I was 5-10 yrs old, not fully aware if you know what I mean, and never saw an actual snake only the skins they shed, but never in my neighborhood only on the hikes in the woods.

So true! When I read the snake on the curtain box story years ago, it was on the 2nd floor, not the 4th LOL

Ohh I see there is a video, I guess that was a separate incident!!!

Oh, and those little lizard things don't bother me, they are everywhere though and I've seen kids try to follow them into the bushes. So that's another one. Tell the kids don't to follow the lizards!
