Mom's with a colic baby or had a colic baby
three questions - 1)when did your or would you see a ped GI?
2) if you used a pro-biotic - did you consult with your pediatrician? or did you just do it?
3) if your baby was on formula - did you try or were told to try a thicker formula? TIA

Re: Mom's with a colic baby or had a colic baby
1- we did not see a GI
2- We tried Bio Gaia drops- didn't ask the ped. They really didnt' seem to help her much.
3- The ped said to try a formula for fussiness and gas- like Gentlease. It helped somewhat. But then she got reflux and was vomitting up her entire bottle a lot. So we had to switch her to an AR formula- which was thicker.
The thicker formula is more for reflux/spit up than colic/gas

Re: Mom's with a colic baby or had a colic baby
1.Saw a GI when he was 2 weeks old. 2.Did not use a probiotic. 3. Was told to thicken formula with cereal but it was for the reflux. 4.Changed to Nutramigen formula for milk intolerance. 5. Put on Zantac and Antacid(reflux).
Are you sure it is colic and not reflux? Similar symptoms...does your LO spit up, arch back, etc.??
The above really helped.

Ok - DS is on gentlease and will start zantac today... but Ped thinks that maybe if there isnt some relief in about a week or so - that maybe we would switch to Enfamil AR. Just worried that it could help with the AR but worsen the gas/colic issue... I have and am trying the gas drops... gripe water etc.. and its not doing much...
What worked for you?

three questions - 1)when did your or would you see a ped GI? Never saw one
2) if you used a pro-biotic - did you consult with your pediatrician? or did you just do it? Never used one
3) if your baby was on formula - did you try or were told to try a thicker formula? I switched from regular to gentlease. It's not thicker. Thicker is usually for reflux. Colic is not reflux.

So just on a whim - I tried the Nutramigen last week and it was a disaster! He went on a hunger strike as well as a inconsolable crying - it just wasnt for him... We are going to do Zantac starting today... I am not sure whats what anymore. I do know he is gassy... and prior to the spitting up - exhibited the "classic colic"signs... I mean his stomach would get so distended...it was horrible I feel so bad...

Re: Mom's with a colic baby or had a colic baby
My nephew had colic. My sister took him to a ped GI maybe when he was a month old. he was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy, even Alimentum showed blood in his stool so now he is on Elecare. He is 3 months now and has gotten a lot better.

The AR formula constipated her for a little while- because it is thickened with rice starch. But she got over that rather quickly I tried the gas drops, the gripe water, etc. To be honest, not much worked. Age and time were the only thing that helped really

Re: Mom's with a colic baby or had a colic baby
never saw GI. Switching to Nutramigen helped a little, but honestly, it just took time. Gas, fussiness and colic really stopped once he was able to sit on his own. He likes to sit and it helps with digestion and gas. I'd stay things took a turn for the better around 5 months. It was a LONG 5 months. We tried gripe water, mylicon, several formulas, zantac, the works.

1. we saw one as soon we could. 5 weeks old i guess it was.
2. no i did not. We just did it. It helped with the constipation issues so that was good.
3. we were on the 3rd formula by the time we saw the GI. We weren't told to try a thicker formula. We're 2nd time parents and our 1st had reflux as well. So we kind of new what to try and when to move on.
ETA: nothing worked for us as far as drops and i tried it all, even the expensive colic calm. Nada.
The only thing that worked was the right formula (4th one) and the prilosec compound. Once we had that figured out by 2+ months, he got much better. By 3 months he was like a new baby and so happy!!!!

Re: Mom's with a colic baby or had a colic baby
My DS is now 15 months old. He had colic really bad for te first 6-8 months. He also had AR. He was taken to a GI at his 4-5 month visit. His stool was tested for blood and the GI Ped said there was no need to switch him to nutramigen, so we kept him in Gentlease. He was given Axcid and that helped a great deal.

Re: Mom's with a colic baby or had a colic baby
1)we saw a GI when he was about a month old. The doc put him on zantac and it worked wonders.
2) We didnt use a probiotic
3)We tried EVERY formula. The only one that seemed to make a tiny bit difference was Enfamil Gentelease.

Re: Mom's with a colic baby or had a colic baby
SO thank you everyone for all the advice! We are taking zantac and seem to be doing well. Holding off on the formula change... but we are doing other little things to improve his digestion too!
Thanks again! Wish us luck!

1. We did not see a ped GI
2. We switched to Similac Sensitive for fussiness and gas without the consult of our ped. We told him at the next visit and he was okay with it based on the symptoms the baby had. DS seemed to respond well to it and wasn't as fussy anymore.
3. DS is on a thicker formula now (Similac Sensitive for spit up-has rice protein in it) because he was spitting up too much and was diagnosed with acid reflux. The ped wanted us to try this before giving DS meds. It has helped him so much and if he does tend to get fussy we give him gas drops and he is fine.

Mom's with a colic baby or had a colic baby
Nutrmagin and alimentum both have a very different taste and smell than reg fotmula. I would suggest weaning slowly onto these formulas than switching cold turkey. I tried cold.turkey once with dd from gerber good start ti alimentum she threw up everywhere violently and refused her bottles. But when i mixed 75% gerber to 25% alimnetum for 2 days then 50-50 mix for 2 days then 75-25 then 90-10 then 100% i had a brand new baby!
And to answer your questions: 1. Yes total waste of time all my dd needed was a formula change there was nothing else wrong. She was constantly misdiagnosed and miserable for 2 1/2 months. I wish i would have listened to my instinct sooner. 2. Yes but my dr recommended it. I would speak to your ped first 3. See #1 try a hypoallegenic.formula

So sorry to hear it didn't work for your LO. Hope he feels better soon!! I know how hard it is and how bad you feel for your LO, it's heartbreaking.
