FMLA vent
I just need to vent.
I am 1 month away from my due date... ONE MONTH. we had everything planned out... that i can't take all 12 weeks of FMLA cause I can't/won't use ALL my vacation time. I want to have a week or 2 saved to use with DH AND BABY over the summer. Weeks we can use as a family to be together. But we also could not afford to lose my check for more than 2 weeks... I was going to take a couple vacation weeks and a couple unpaid weeks to get to 10 weeks after STD was done.
they told us effective today, we have to use all accrued vacation time before using unpaid. I am not a teacher, i don't get off for the summer and all the extra holidays. this changes everything for us and now probably can't take the 10 weeks I had worked hard to figure out how to use. I don't have summers at home with my baby to look forward to or anything so its been a hard decision from the beginning. Now... 1 month before I have to change it, have less time and have nothing left .
ok, vent over

Re: FMLA vent
I get all of my accrued time when I go on Maternity. Then disability for the time off. I cannot use any time I have not accrued yet. So when I return to work after maternity I will still have whatever amount of vacation, sick personal and holiday that is left for the year. Are you sure this isn't how your job works? Do you accrue time each month or do you get all of your days at the beginning of the year?

Oh I am so sorry, I understand your frustrations. Any chance they would let cut your work schedule to part time while you are out, yes it would be a smaller paycheck, but maybe leave you some time at the end.
This is what I was able to do. I cut to a 60% (3 days a week) schedule while I was out, so I was able to reserve a few days of time off when I cam back to work. I hope that makes sense...

I'm sorry - the first time I was out we weren't allowed to use unaccrued time and the second time they gave us the ability to choose - I did what you were planning to do to save some time.
Can you explain your situation to your employer and take the unpaid time you were planning during your leave during the summer instead?

Re: FMLA vent
rather than quote each of you....
I accrue each month, and no, there is no negotiating. I spoke to HR already as soon as it was communicated
thanks for the ideas tho

If you accrue each month is the time you have to use the time you have already accrued? because if that is the case you will start accruing again once you go back to work....and then could take a vacation a few months in...

Can you try talking directly to your boss? My place has a policy that any accrued vacation is included in your maternity leave, which makes NO sense (not that you get the additional time - basically you just lose it), so when I took maternity leave last time I worked it out directly with my boss that I could take the time after my leave instead of using it before. HR was not invoved at all.
