Introducing Purees

My DD will be 6months next week. She's very interested in what we eat. So I think it's time.

Her daycare is wanting me to give them portion and frequency. Ummmmmmmm I don't have a clue Chat Icon

I believe I read it's good to start with 1 tablespoon but that's all I know.

I ebf her and provide her daycare with bm. She eats 6.5oz every 3hours. Give or take.

I saw a post on here from someone who uses a nanny that had a great schedule but I didn't notebook it Chat Icon

Help a FTM out. Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeee Chat Icon

TIA

Introducing Purees

I started with just one meal a day at 6 months. I gave her oatmeal about 1-1.5 hours after her first feeding. I never measured except for the first time I made it when I followed the directions on the box for a "first feeding". After 3 days we moved on to banana, squash, etc (something new every 3-4 days). I would start on a weekend when you're home so you can see (and capture on film) the adorable faces she'll likely make! It took DD a week or so to get the hang of it. We added second meal in the evening around 7 months and then a 3rd (although I still sometimes skip it) after 8 months. Always 1-1.5 hours after she nurses.

Introducing Purees

At that age feed your DD until she stops eating. SHe will not overeat.

I would start with stage 1 from whatever company (unless you are going to make your own). She will not eat more than the stage one container unless she is a super eater.

DId you do cereal yet? THat is where they tell you to start with tablespoon (mix with BM or formula) and see what she eats.

the only thing you need to really worry about is stickign with one thing for 3 days to make sure there are no allergic reactions.

I started with one meal a day at 4 months and upped it to 2 at 6 months. I would start with one meal (i did dinner so I could feed DS) and then added in breakfast at 6 months and at 9 months we were doing 3 meals.

Introducing Purees

When I introduced purees to DD1, she was EBF too. I opted to just do the purees at home at night when we got home. I did homemade foods, frozen into ice cube trays, about 1oz a piece, in addition to nursing. Each new food was the only food for 3-4 days to make sure she didn't react, and I did the purees once per day at first. So, I'd feed her the food first and then bf her or give her the bottle (DH)

I'll be making her food. I wasn't sure if I should be giving it to her before or after I nurse her.

On the weekdays. She get's home around 630pm five mins. later I nurse her. DH and I have dinner between 7-730pm. She's usually in her saucer. At around 8-815pm It's bed time and I nurse her on last time. Should I give it a go while we're having dinner or is that to close to when I nurse her?

I would give the food before nursing. If you nurse first she might not eat it or it will be a battle. I would space it out. Feed then nurse hour or so later. You might see her drop in the amount she nurses for that feeding.

I bottle fed and my DS def dropped a bit of formula (not a tone though)

My DD is 5.5 months old. We just started oatmeal this week. I exclusively breastfeed, so during our dinner time (6:30ish), which is usually her bedtime feeding, before I feed her I give her 1 tablespoon of the oatmeal (mixed with BM) and then I nurse her when she is done with that and then she goes to sleep shortly after.

I will do this for at least a week or two. I will then try bananas and applesauce. Then I might start mixing the oatmeal with the bananas/applesauce and do a combo. Once she is 6 months old and has tried all of those three plus a combo, I will reevaluate. Right now I am sticking with 1 tablespoon of oatmeal before bed.

I disagree. Food is for practice. It's more important for her to get the nutrition from BM. I always gave food 30-60 minutes after nursing. If DS didn't eat as much solid food, that was fine.

With DS1, I moved pretty quickly to 2 meals per day. By 7.5 months, he had 3 meals per day. I started out with 1 tbsp of cereal and BM. Then, I'd add 1 oz of something else. Eventually, he took about 4 oz of solids at a time sometimes more. I recently started DS2 on solids. He's not as interested in them though he does better at daycare. My guess is even though he nursed before solids, he'd rather nurse from me than have food. Right now, he only gets 1 tbsp of oatmeal and some fruit for breakfast. He'll only eat a few spoonfuls from me so I'm not pushing it. At daycare, he eats it all though (generally an hour after I finish nursing him).

If you haven't checked it out, I always liked wholesomebabyfood.com. It's a great resource especially if you make your own food.

Introducing Purees

My peds recommended 1 tablespoon to start to get her body used to digesting food. MUCH different than BM or formula. A lot more for them to break down and you need to go slow.
My peds also recommended making the puree a lil water at first again to get their body used to digesting.

I was told to space it out after her morning bottle about an hour then feed then wait about an hour again before a bottle. Just try to hold off as long as possible before giving the next bottle.

Food is for practice not trying to fill her up so you shouldnt feed her until she stops especially since shes never eaten before.

Also my peds was against cereals due to a lot of alarming information he had heard about the additives in them. He recommended veggies first and now my DD is 7 months I started fruit with her so she eats twice a day now.

Also when you try feeding solids try early in the day so if there is a reaction its not happening overnight where you will lose sleep.

And the first few times they may not even finish the whole tablespoon and they may even end up wearing more than they eat LOL

Also try the same food for 3-4 days before introducing another one so you can be sure there are no reactions.

At 6 months I started with Sweet potatoes, squash and carrots. And fruit I started with applesauce and pears.

HTH

ETA: wholesomebabyfood.com one of the best baby food websites I found. Very informative and great easy recipes for baby food. Explains how to sustain the most nutrients, how long it can stay in the fridge vs freezer. different ways to make it, different foods to mix when you can. Great site over all!

Introducing Purees

My ped told me to feed her and hour after she nurses.
When DD was 6 months we started her on sweet potatoes, avacado, peas, carrots, peaches, etc. About 1 oz first and then we gradually added more.

Another disagree here.....give her the baby food after you nurse her. My general rule with both of my DD's was BF/bottle and then food about an hour later. Food is just practice at this point. Your BM is way more important than the purees/cereal!

I started with "dinner" so that I could feed them. After we were pretty established on that, I added in "breakfast". An example of a day once your DD has 2 meals a day would be soemthing like this....(this was my DD at about 7 months)

7:30am Wake up & nurse
9am breakfast
10am nurse & nap
1pm nurse
3pm nap
5pm nurse
6pm dinner
8pm nurse & bed

Of course that is a very rough guideline...but I am sure you get what I mean

Introducing Purees

Honestly you have to follow what your Ped recs and your gut as a mom for the schedule.

My view and my peds is not that purées is training to eat. So I never worried about my DS not drinking as much. In fact my Ped was perfectly fine with him dropping ounces. DS was getting plenty of nutrients from the fruits and veggies in combo with formula. So we did not nor did my Ped have a problem with DS eating before a bottle. If he had the bottle first he would not eat. So it worked for us.

There is no perfect so take all the advice here and take the pieces that work for you and run with it.

This is what we did with all 3 kids. Foods the first year are just practice. All she needs is breastmilk. So nurse before. If she starts to drop a feeding cut back on the solids. My DS was a big baby and hardly ate anything his first year. He just wasn't that interested. Make it fun. Don't put any strict schedule on it, and don't push it. She will led the way.
