Im hoping it's more like a LIJ then a NUMCChat Icon I always loved hospitals stays so im pretty excited (im strange) haha but just hope it's hope it's a lil more upscaled then the last couple of hospitals I been to. I cannot find any photos online of what the maternity ward looks like so thats been annoying me but I guess I should call about a tour. I wouldn't exactly call Winthrop upscale, but I had a great experience there. The staff is excellent and the food is pretty good... especially the dessert cart that comes around at night! lol

Oh good, I always love hospital food - Do they do the surf and turf dinner like most hospitals do on your last night there? My 1st I had at Plainview, it's small and old fashion but I loved it ( and amazing food) but with my 2nd at NUMC, it was just kinda gross atmosphere all around. I had 1 overnight stay at LIJ Manhasset for fetal observation 8 years ago and it was awesome except for I wasnt allow to eat at all which was pure touture (in case of emergency c-section)

No, there was no Surf & Turf involved lol. I would definitely do a hospital tour to get to know the place!

Re: Winthrop experience?

My sister had both of her girls at Winthrop and had great experiences.
I will be delivering at Winthrop as well. I am very happy to be delivering there. We had a tour of the hospital a few weeks ago. It was part of a class through our doctor. Everyone says its a waste of time, but DH and I really liked it. They showed you everywhere that you could possibly be and gave you so much info about their procedures. The labor and delivery room is calming and bright. They have a state of the art NICU steps away from L&D. They were in the process of renovating the rooms in maternity because their goal is to have everyone get a private room. Hope this info helps.

Re: Winthrop experience?

Had DD at Winthrop and loved it. Very clean, very professional staff, and the NICU (where my DD spent her 1st week of life) was fantastic. Also was a huge help with BF'ing, if you decide to do that. I'll be having all my future kids there, although I've been told that LIJ is just as good, if not better... but now that I know Winthrop and I know it's great, I don't wanna change :)

Winthrop experience?

I had DS at Winthrop in November (c-section). I was there for 4 nights and had my own room the entire time. I thought the food ws really good for hospital food. The staff was really nice and helpful. The only thing I didn't like was that sometimes I would call the nurses and they forgot about me. Once I had to wait 30 mins for them to take me down to see DS in NICU (I wasn't walking yet) and only came after I called them AGAIN. Then I called for them to bring me back up and they forgot about me yet again. I know they are busy but I felt like I was always waiting for the nurses forever.

I had a good experience for the most part. I delivered there in August and it was busy. I got my own room though, thank goodness. Everything was good with the exception of dealing with one nurse while I was in labor. I was having bad contractions and they would not give me an epidural until I was at least 4 cm, but I wasn't progressing at all. I guess I was complaining and the nurse basically told me to get over it, this is your first... like really? And then when I was in pain and needed a nurse, my DH asked her for help and she was like "i'm not her nurse, you need to call the nurse for this room". Other than dealing with her the rest of my experience was good.

Winthrop experience?

I thought all rooms at Winthrop were private. Are they not?

the rooms at winthrop ARE NOT private but they make every effort to not double up.

when i was there a little less than 3 years ago, people were doubled. I paid for a private room.

Delivering there on Monday, I can update more after but I had a very positive experience.

One nurse was a little "snippy" and I didn't appreciate her attitude but everyone else bent over backwards for us. Hoping for the same this time.

Re: Winthrop experience?

I just delivered at Winthrop on Saturday. The rooms are not private but they made a point of saying they try hard not to double up. My roommate arrived as I was being discharged. I found the nurses wonderful and the food okay. I was sad the shower was not in my room - but I was only there about 24 hours, so no big deal really.

I delivered at Winthrop in 2011 and had a very good experience there. The recovery nurse was an angel sent from heaven and took excellent care of me. I was in a double room but never had a roommate the 4 days I was in maternity.

Re: Winthrop experience?

When do you pay for the private room? Do you reserve ahead of time? Or when you get there? I will also have a scheuled c-section.

I don't think you can reserve ahead of time since they can't guranatee it. I think you pay the admitting clerk and you let L&D know you are paying for a private room as soon as you get admitted so they can let the post partum unit know to save it for you.

When I delivered there in September that wasn't an option (all single rooms were occupied). I asked about it on my tour in August. They said the don't do private rooms anymore, whatever that means, even though I knew they have some single rooms. I think your best bet is to just call and ask how you can get a private room.

To the OP, the food is excellent. You would not expect that quality in a hospital! They have a gourmet dessert cart that goes around the maternity floor I think it was Wednesday and Friday afternoons.

Re: Winthrop experience?

I didnt have my baby there but my SIL and 4 friends had babies there and they all said they would go somewhere else.
Some of the things they didnt like were:
Pushy with Breastfeeding only. Couldnt do BF with SUpplement they had to choose that in the check in and were not helpful if since she changed her mind after birth.

the Nurses were not always attentive when in the room.

My SIL heard that there was a lady trying to come in after hours stating she was related to someone and there was no patient in the area with that name and the nurses had to call security.
Im sure that last one doesnt happen all the time and who knows what happened but it was just a scary thing for her to hear.

Re: Winthrop experience?

I had all 3 of mine there. My first two were in 2004 and 2006 and my last in February 2012.

For my last, I had a c/s late on a Friday night (unplanned due to pre-e). Didn't get to my room until 2 am. It was a tiny room and there was a girl in it. I asked the nurse if I could get a private room and she promised me they girl was leaving in the morning and they wouldn't put anyone else in with me. She left in the morning and I had the room to myself the other 3 night (I did stay the full 4 nights because I had BP issues).

My biggest complaint was the nursing students from the local college. I sincerely mean no disrespect to them at all, but they would come in, give me their spiel, ask if they could take my vitals, and I was like ok.... and then they would leave. But I guess that opened the door for them so to speak and they kept coming in like every 20 minutes to ask if I was ok or needed anything! What I needed was quiet so I could sleep when my baby was!! there were 2 afternoons I had no visitors, was doing fine, was finally getting some sleep, and she came in to talk to me, waking me up!

My other complaint was the room was soooo freaking HOT! It was February, and I tried to turn on the AC in the wall/window unit and it just blew hot air. One night I actually had the nurse bring me ice packs so I could fall asleep. It didn't help that the adjustable beds are a plastic-y rubber material under the sheets.

Since I had a c/s, my first meal was liquids (gross jello!), but by dinner that night I was able to go on solid foods and the nurse had me fill out my menu choices for the next few days and she took it to the person in charge. My meal came as liquid again. Somewhere, someone didn't get the menu right, but my nurse was awesome and she hunted down a meal for me. I had the same issue again the next day, so for the first 2 days, I wasn't getting the meals I was supposed to get. By the time it was ironed out, I was getting ready to check out. One night, my DH brought me dinner since mine hadn't come by 7 pm (they serve meals sooo early).
