Mastitis question?

I think I have mastitis. I got excruciating pain in my right breast when I was waiting for ds to wake up and feed. It had been4 hours and he's 3 months old. I woke him up to eat and it as painful. He ate for 10 min which is a lot for him on one side. I started getting freezing and dizzy. I got dh and told him to give him a bottle. I pumped and got 2 more oz from that breast. I have a fever of 100.4 and my breast is still sore but not excruciating. There is no redness.

My question is, if it is mastitis, how serious is it? Do u think I need to go to urgent care tomorrow or do u think if I need antibiotics it could wait til Monday.

Sorry so long, but I appreciate any help from anyone who has gone thru this.

You should get antibiotics ASAP. I had mastitis and I just kept getting worse and worse and I knew I had it but I kept calling the ob office and the receptionist kept telling me there was no such thing as mastitis and she even asked the dr who also said she never heard of it. I was floored. I ended up getting so sick and my fever went to 104 dh rushed me to Good Sam since it was Labor Day and sure enough, I had mastitis. They told me to follow up with my ob and when I did she goes, "why didn't you just come in at the beginning". Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon The antibiotics cleared it up right away.

I would get antibiotics tom!

If there is a clog this is what helped me. (I had twins and taking a long hot shower was not an option). I would put warm/hot water in a zip lock bag and put it on the spot that was hurting for 20 minutes or so then I would nurse/pump. While nursing/pumping I would massage it. I sometimes even used a cap to a dr brown bottle to really massage it. It hurt but usually got it to unclog.

Feel better!

Re: Mastitis question?

Thanks ladies! I actually am feeling better now .... Now I'm hot instead of cold and fever went down. Is it possible that its not masts is? Do you think an urgent care can diagnose as well as ob?

Re: Mastitis question?

I agree with the PPs and think you should get antibiotics ASAP. I had the same as you and the flu-like symptoms bothered me more than the sore breast to be honest. Getting antibiotics before it got too bad really helped.

Hope you feel better soon!!Chat Icon

ETA: I called my doc with my symptoms and they put in a script for me...I didn't need to go to the DR. I was 100% sure it was mastitis.

Re: Mastitis question?

I had mastitis and it was awful. Horrible pain, my breast was so tender and red - and hot to the touch. I didn't have a fever, but had the chills like I did. My OB prescribed antibiotics and I started feeling better within 24 hours.
It is also really important to get the the clog out - nurse like crazy, and if the baby is not nursing, pump!

Re: Mastitis question?

I don't think it's mastitis. I feel fine today and no fever or chills or anything, so I'm not going to urgent care. So strange how I was so miserable for 2 hours, and now I'm fine. My right breast is still tender but not excruciating. If it still hurts tomorrow ill go to ob. But thank you so much for all of your advice and well wishes. Tis site is amazing

Keep an eye on it...I had it and it got better for a day and then came back the next day with avengence! I still am not sure if it was mastitis or maybe it was severe engorgement bc I never got the red spots either. But I had pain in both breast and a 103 fever and flu symptoms and was in bed for 24 hours! I wish I had gone to the dr the first night I had the chills but brushed it off. I then went to urgent care ad they have me a prescription and I felt better pretty fast.
