If you or DH work nights come in

This is my first week back to work. I work overnight shifts. I'm working tonight and tomorrow night and DH will have the baby during the day while I sleep. DH works 9-5 m-F. This morning he woke me up at 6:15 and I couldn't go back to sleep. Even while DD napped. So now I'm going to be up for well over 24 hours, taking care of patients tonight and driving home in the morning. I thought it was very inconsiderate to wake me up to change and feed the baby. And no, he wasn't running late. How do you handle opposite schedules?

I have no advice on opposite shifts but I used to work the night shift as a nurse before I had kids. I know a lot of nurses with kids that do the night shift and I give you all a lot of credit! I could never do it. I'm sure you will figure out a routine that will work for you. Good luck Chat Icon

It's a bit different for us because I don't work and my husband works either night shift, 2 weeks of nights at a time, or every 2/3 nights. On the weeks he is on night shifts. I leave the house during the day. I feel like it's only fair that I leave him to sleep since he has to go back to work that night. I take DD and we'll go to my parents, go to classes, library, etc. I'll come home for her nap and about 2 hours before he goes back to work so they can hang. The rest of the time when he works overnight and is post call (day off). I don't go out of my way to not be home. If he slept at the hospital he's usually fine till DD's nap at which point he'll sleep. If he is totally exhausted he'll sleep while we play downstairs. He always always goes to bed early those nights. Sometimes, at 7 when DD goes down or right after she goes down. I can't imagine doing what you do! Could you maybe bring DD to daycare a few days a week?

Re: If you or DH work nights come in

I work M-F 730-3 and DH works M-F 5-2am or 5-3am. The boys are in daycare 3 days a week, home with him on Monday because he doesn't work Sunday nights and then home with him Fri.
When I get home I make dinner we eat and he leaves, I do bath bed as well as wake up and breakfast.
So I pretty much just do everything and that's how we work. It sucks but it's always been this way.
I would have been annoyed if I were you just for the fact that it will become unsafe the longer your up and that's not good for anyone.
Maybe you should work put a schedule together that way everyone gets what they want and there is no confusion.

Wow! not cool! Id be pissed.

I work m- f 8-4 from home. (7-4 wed really) I have the girls m/w from 12:20 -4 then all night and from 9-? Tues on Dhs early day. Dh is off th/f. He leaves for work at 12:20 and works til 1:30/2. I usually take both feedings unless both scream then we both get up. He just got home a few hrs ago so its not fair to him. BUT, they sleep til 8:30 then, he feeds them and goes back to sleep with them. It sucks because they wake at 5:30 sometimes and I get up at 7. Today I had to work at 7 for a dr apt so I just stayed up. It's different with 2 I guess.and he goes into work later too. Neither of us has a choice. I just try to go to sleep early.

I work 7pm-7am 3 days a week (they rotate). My husband works 730-4pm m-f. On the weekends he lets me sleep. During the week by the time I come home he left If I have to go back to work he takes ds to his day care. Then I get to sleep and its quite. Its the only way we can do it. I have tried with no sleep and its no good.

i think thats rude that he woke you up to change the baby, he couldnt do it himself? We are the opposite, I work days and DH works nights. We have a sitter watch DS until from when I leave for work until he gets home and then my father will be available some days in the afternoon to watch DS while DH sleeps. If he hasn't gotten enough sleep, then he will sleep for a few hours when I get home. It's kinda rough on DH but we make it work.

Re: If you or DH work nights come in

I was working 1-2 nights/week after having DS and then when I went back to work after having DD from June-Oct was FT nights (7p-7:30a). I am not a night person at all and for me it was awful The only way I was a little normal was by having someone watch the kids from 8-4 so I could sleep ALL day. If I got woken up or didn't sleep I was miserable. And the days I had to go in and I couldn't nap before were rough. We got an au pair and life got much better not worrying about finding someone to watch the kids so I could nap. Then I got a day position and I'll never go back to nights... I just can't do it. Good luck, I hope you find a solution that works for you. If my DH woke me like your did he would be very sorry Chat Icon
