For those who are having twins or had twins..
When did you know if they were indentical or fraternal. I'm 7 weeks today. This is gonna be a question I ask on Monday when I have my sono. Is it too early to tell? I heard that if they share the same placenta it's indentical but if they each have their own it's fraternal. Is this true?

I was told by all my doctors that my sons were fraternal bc they had separate sacs and placentas. They looked identical and had the same blood type. The day their teeth came in at the exact same spot we ordered a test kit online. Results came back 15/15 dna components were completely identical! Glad I didn't listen to the doctors! They split immediately and just formed their own of everything very early which is also very rare.

If you did fertility treatments they're most likely fraternal (although not always ). They couldve told you at your last appt.

This is what I've been told too. It's crazy though, because I've had friends who had fraternal twins (same gender) and their kids look identical!

My RE was able to tell me they were Fraternal at my very first sono. Identicals would be in 1 sac, yours have their own, making them Fraternal.

Since you did fertility treatments and you know you had multiple follies, they are likely fraternal. Unless you/your husband have twins running in your family, identical would be unlikely. It's possible, but all signs would point towards fraternal.

I am thinking it's fratternal..But twins does run in my side of the family. On my father's side. My grandpa's cousin was an identical twin!!!!

I could be wrong, but I don't think identical twins can be hereditary. Fraternal twins can be because some women are more prone to releasing multiple eggs. But an egg splitting I think is just something (really cool) that happens without any way to predict in advance.

Exactly! My DH is an Identical Twin and whenever we tell people we are having twins, their first reaction is "OOOOH bc Rich is a twin!". I have to then explain to them that we're having Fraternal Twins, but Identicals aren't hereditary anyway.

Did you conceive using fertility treatments? I dont agree its 100% untrue. Just that it was in your case, which you said is rare. She did fertility treatments and had multiple eggs release, so the odds are that hers are fraternal. That being said, if she asks her dr they'll probably tell her fraternal I would imagine...i would be shocked if they didn't. But maybe hers are identical too-only time will tell.

Agreed.. My first round of IVF we had triplets which included one set of identical twins. They shared a sac.
Oh and to the OP, I'm sure you will get lots of "hope you get " remarks.. trust me, ANY combination is a blessing. Just hope for the best. Sorry. Gender comments irk me.

i knew mine were identical at my 8 week sonogram...shared a placenta.
i put a dot of nail polish in different colors on their big toes to tell them apart haha big fear of mine to mix them up...i got made fun of for leaving hospital bands on for almost a month!

I have identical twins. Mine are mono-di (one placenta, 2 sacs). Identical twins are not genetic and contain no hereditary characteristic. They are a fluke of nature that no one can explain.
Since you had fertility treatments. Chances are they made your body produce more eggs. Therefore it is highly likely that yours are fraternal.
Although it can happen for those women who received fertility treatments to have identical twins, it is still rare. Such occurences are even more rare compared to the rest of the population.
As for telling identical twins apart, as a mom I can assure you that I have only confused them once in 4 years. My girls are supposedly extremely identical (even to my husband). I am the only person who has no issues. Call it motherly instinct.

People always amaze me. My daughter once was all in pink with a hat with a huge flower and was ask if she was a boy. I was tempted to answer yes and tell them her name was Elton John ,!
