When you get a birth announcment..
Do you view it as a request for a gift?
MIL told me not to send announcments to certain people because they have an agreement not to send baby gifts when their grandchildren are born. I found this weird. I just send them to show people the babies and this is how I view them also. If I see someone I exchange gifts with I give a gift when I see them and the baby. Is this and old school thing.

When you get a birth announcment..
I never heard of such a thing or even thought of it that way lol. I always thought birth announcements were to show everyone what the baby looks like and give info like weight and date born. I think they're nice! I like getting them

I thought this was just a MIL thing but her sister said it was a gift request too. His cousin didnt think so so maybe its just a generation thing.
ETA, besides everyone who got one already gave a gift at the shower or sent a gift for the shower.

No, never heard that before. I can't say that we got gifts from anyone that we just sent a birth announcement too that didn't come to see the baby. A few of my MIL's friends sent gifts, but they did that before they got birth announcements.

I definitely don't see it that way.... most people who will get an announcement will have already come to the shower so I can't see they would think that means we're looking for another gift...

I definitely have heard that before, and a lot of people from the previous generation believe you must send a gift if you get a birth announcement, so yes.
My MIL's boss said, "I want to give a gift, but I didn't get a birth announcement yet..." like he was holding the gift hostage until I sent a birth announcement?!?!

No, not at all. It's a birth announcement, not a party invitation. Honestly, what your MIL said is silliest thing I ever heard. Send your announcement, I wouldn't listen to her.

I figure its a generation thing but my mom doesn't thing it's a gift request. Maybe it's just something his family does. Very possible. I sent them over a week ago. Just not to the people she said not to. I'm not worried. I was just wondering if anyone else heard of this. We did get a gift from one of mils cousins. But she probably would have sent a gift anyway because mil always sends her kids stuff. (She is a lot younger than mil)
