North Baldwin?

Just beginning to house hunt...I know the high school in Baldwin is not the greatest, but the elementary schools and middle school seem ok. How is the neighborhood in general?

Parts of Baldwin are beautiful. Other parts are so so. The parts of Baldwin that butt up against RVC are well kept and I would say are a safe section. The houses are reasonablly priced and the taxes aren't too bad. As you said the high school doesn't have a great reputation. If you are looking at that area I would expand my reach and look at South hempstead which is in the RVC district. The houses are in the same price range as north baldwin and you get the RVC district.

I live in North Baldwin off of Demott near the RVC border

I love my neighborhood - it's got a great elementary school, there a ton of families here and it's close to everything. However, i wish that the Grand Ave businesses could get revitalized somehow. There are a ton of closed stores and the area could really thrive if the right places went in.

Re: North Baldwin?

You should FM the LIF poster, MsMelloYellow, I believe she lives in No. Baldwin. I live on the south shore (Baldwin Harbor bordering Oceanside area) and the area isn't too bad. The HS has a bad rap, not sure why...the sucky part is all the traffic between Sunrise Hwy and the SSP on Grand Ave during rush hour.

Re: North Baldwin?

I live in Baldwin, right on the edge of the Baldwin Harbor area and I absolutely love it! My neighborhood is amazing and beautiful. We have great neighbors, well-kept homes and homes on our block sell quickly. 2 houses were up for sale this summer and they both went into contract within 1 month, with multiple offers. The elementary schools have a really good reputation as does the middle school. The high school rep is not great but I see that several kids on our block go there.

I don't know much about North Baldwin but I have heard that there are some really nice houses in that area. I think you can get a lot for your money in Baldwin, especially now that interest rates and housing prices are so low. When I think long term and whether or not to move to another district, I'm honestly not sure. For the huge increase we'd have to pay to get a house comparable to our own (a center hall colonial) plus the increase in taxes (not that Baldwin taxes are low), we could just as easily put our child in a private school. It would actually be cheaper (unlikely I'd spend 400K on private school tuition for my child).

Re: North Baldwin?

Honestly, if the high school has a bad rep i wouldn't buy there unless i planned on sending my kids to private school. I have many friends who bought in a bad sd because it was their "starter house" and they're still there years later.

North Baldwin?

We're buying in Baldwin but Oceanside schools. My grandparents have lived in South Hempstead their entire lives (from when it was literally being built, my grandfathers mothers house was one of the first in the neighborhood) and they advised us to stay out of Baldwin schools. They feel the whole area is going down hill.

Not sure how true this is but I have family who live in Freeport and they told me that people drive their kids or have them take the train from the city to Freeport and Baldwin high schools and that's why it's getting so bad there. One again, not sure how true that is but that's what I heard from people I know who live there.

So now its the "city" kids who make it bad. People are unreal! I don't think even city kids are able to go to schools on Long Island.

Unless they have family in the district and they are using that address as their residence this isn't true. You can't live out of district and go to school there. That's true for ANY school district.

Right, I didnt think so. So I just don't understand how "city" kids make a high school look bad.

I never said city kids were bad, please show me where I said that. The people who are going there are doing so using another persons address that's how they are getting in. Maybe it's the overcrowding, idk but obviously just because kids are from the city doesn't make them bad. Look at Massapequa, huge heroin problem and people flock there for their great schools.

You can't, that is why the district has hired it's own investigator to combat this problem. It pays for itself once students using resources who are from out of district are caught.

To op: Baldwin is in a strange place right now, if the downtown revitalization goes through I think a lot is going to change for the better. People love to hate Baldwin and A lot of the "bad" is very over exaggerated in my opinion. If you want to find out more about some of the good things going on in town you can go to the new civic association's Facebook page "Baldwin needs revitalization ". That Facebook page is what started the civic association so that is why it is named that. You will see from this that there are a lot of good people who love their town. If you have any other questions feel free for FM me.

my grandmother is in Baldwin between merrick and sunrise. She has lived there for 50ish years. I would not buy in Baldwin if I planned to live their long term based on the SD.

The area (like much of western and middle nassau has changed.) Baldwin Harbor is nice but I would not buy there because of flood insurance and you still battle the SD issue. JMHO having grown-up spending many, many, many weekends there.

North Baldwin?

I have family that lives in Baldwin and they love it. They live closer to the RVC border.

Not looking to start any drama but as far as the schools I had three cousins go to the schools. No issues in elementary or middle school. Two of my cousins went to the high school and my aunts pulled them out because my cousin was threatened by another student with a weapon. My youngest cousin now goes to the high school and has no problems.

My opinion no matter what neighborhood you are in you are going to encounter some bad things and good things.

Overall Baldwin is a good neighborhood and my family is happy living there.

North Baldwin?

Bottom line, the more urban or close to an urban area a school is the more issues with gangs. Hempstead is very close to Baldwin and there is a huge issue with gangs (m83 to name one). You get students whose friends/relatives etc are in with the gangs and those violent tendencies spread. That's my fear. Having been in college classes lately, kids are super disobedient listening to music during class, texting etc. obviously I agent been in high school for quite some time, but if those kids are any indication of what high school kids are like that could also be an issue. Meaning, if the don't have teachers to put them in line they won't learn anything bc they are too busy getting away with stuff. Just my two cents.

But the housing and taxes are at least double that of Baldwin.
