short term disability
TTC crasher - So my employer does not offer short term disability  Are you able to purchase an individual short term disability policy from an outside company? I thought aflac offered this but I checked their website and they only offer it through your employer. Does anyone know of any companies that sell individual policies? If I don't find coverage, I don't know how I will ever afford to take maternity leave! Thanks in advance

yes, i took a short term policy through Colonial - I pay about $62 per pay period and will take home $2500.00 per month while out for 8-12 weeks. Its not my salary but certainly better than nothing - the nothing that my company offers 
eta - there IS a waiting period of usually 10-12 months for a short term policy  keep that in mind!

Do they have a website? I would like to look in to it. I've had such a hard time finding an individual policy. It's crazy that not many companies offer this!

As the pp said you can purchase an individual short term policy but you have a wait time (I was told 1 year) before you can benefit from it and if you are already pregnant you wouldn't be able to get it.
My company doesn't have short term disability either so I get the nys pay for 6 weeks (which is about $170 per week) and then I saved up my sick and vacation time so I can have more time off.

call around to double check that...when a friend looked into aflac that is what she was told. other companies may have different policies

if you arent pregnant yet, look into it. Figure you sign up NOW and it takes a few months to conceive, you should be OK
