is this true....residents at stonybrook can deliver??

im probably going to go before my scheduled c-section and someone told me that i could end up having a resident perform my c-section!! i know everyone has to learn on someone, but i dont want it to be me...i already have anxiety over a c-section bc of a complication a friend had that was caused by a doctor error.

can i refuse a resident to do the c-section? and can i refuse certain doctors?? i am a high risk twin pregnancy AND im having my tubes tied...i want it done right Chat Icon

I believe you can refuse a resident . They always told me who everyone was and made sure I was ok with it . HTH

Re: is this true....residents at stonybrook can deliver??

When I was in Stonybrook they told me that bc of my situation, they would not have students coming in to see me or ask questions, but I did have one resident deliver my first son child that we lost, but there was a doctor right next to her basically right up in there. I was asked if that was ok.

You can always state your preferences when you get admitted and they start asking questions.

They have you sign a paper on admission saying you agree for residents and students to provide care. I assume you can refuse to sign this form. They can't force you to allow a student to do anything.

You can refuse residents and students. I was just in stony brook and didn't have to sign a paper about residents and students though. I would just make your intentions clear when you go there.

Being that I have 4 children and have given birth 5 times at Stony Brook i've had students, residents, a nurse(who litterally caught my preemie as she came in the room), midwife, and the actual attending doctors all deliver my kids.

What i've noticed is that they have an excellent support staff and quick response team who is in there in the blink of an eye if there is complications.

Just make sure you tell them your wishes and make sure whoever is with you knows that you don't want students or residents to deliver. They all introduce themselves and the students ask for permission to be there from my experience.

I am not entirely sure when you are due, but mid year residents ar much better than june/july residents when they do the switchover, and they are freshies coming onto the unit.

I do believe you can refuse. Discuss with your doc. ahead of time..I also do not want a resident, unless I meet them, and get some of their history..sometimes they are better because its not so routine to them, they want to make it perfect. Pretty sure with twins, they will have regular doc. for you.

I would also talk to your doctor because with a c-section, someone has to assist them, resident, physician assistant or another attending md. If it's another attending MD make sure he's in network for your insurance.

Exactly this, my husband was a resident and now is a fellow and while it's pretty common to have a resident assist on a c-section your doctor does the actual cutting etc. You can refuse a resident, but just make sure the other doctor is in your network or you can get stuck having to fight a pretty large bill.
