Big Island, Hawaii

Our San Francisco/Hawaii trip has been extended

We are now thinking of doing 3 days on the Big Island, which neither one of us has ever been to.

Please recommend your hotel and/or things to do.

We stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa Village which was pretty amazing but huge!

Definitely go to see the volcano (which was active last summer when we were there). If you rent a car it's easy to explore lots of the little beaches around the island.

Thanks - we've been looking into the Hilton, the Fairmont Orchid and the Four Seasons. We definitely plan on hitting volcano national park (it's really the whole reason, we're going to the Big Island).

we went to hawaii on our HM but didnt go to the big island but my friends who did go said the only reason they went was for the 4 seasons there and that it was amazing

Question - is the Big Island hard to get to as compared to the other islands? I don't know that much about Hawaii but your post got me thinking, because we have a wedding in San Fran area over memorial day and wanted to take a very extra days and go somewhere nice. The thing is, we were JUST in Cali last year and drove the coast, etc, so I don't feel a great need to go back anywhere in particular (although we love the Napa area and are always happy to spend a few days there). Now you got me thinking that maybe we can try to do a few days in Hawaii which is someplace we've both never been. Thanks for the idea!

It's not really difficult at all. You can either fly directly from SFO to Kona or connect through Honolulu. It's about a 5 hour flight from California.

We originally were going from San Francisco directly to Maui, but added a couple of days to the trip. I did notice that there more direct flights to Maui.
