natural gas powered generator
does anyone have one? after this disaster  (day 9 with no power) we are thinking of getting one. Seems our line is always the last to be restored. We were also out for 8 days with Irene.
Wondering about pricing? Our neighbor has one and he said "a few thousand" we are not close enough with him to feel comfortable asking for numbers.
We already have the external gas line, wondering about the unit and installation.

You can always buy an affordable generator of any type you like, then get a conversion kit to run on gasoline, natural gas, or propane.

(there are other companies that sell the kits, too)
I'm actually looking into this option. That way, if you have natural gas, that's your best option, but if the gas lines get turned off too, you can switch to gasoline.
ETA: Are you looking for a backup generator to run the fridge/phone/TV and some lights, or to run the entire house without having to run extension cords?

I was considering a whole house generator, but since I don't have natural gas it doesn't work for me. I have propane but I heard the whole house generators suck a lot of fuel.
I decided to instead install a transfer switch and an outside outlet on my house which allows me to plug my portable generator directly to my house.
I can't run everything in my house, but I was able to pick 10 breakers on my panel and have those run off the generator. It's nice to just plug the generator in the house and turn things on inside the house without the need of using extension cords.
You need a generator capable of producing 240V in order to do this.

Also expect to spend at least $1000-2000 in electrical labor install for a whole house generator, especially after you add on the cost of a transfer switch. So add that onto whatever the cost of the standby generator is.

We have had a natural gas generator for almost 5 years now. Never had the gas turned off, we aren't in a flood zone or evac zone.
We haven't touched it as far as maintenance in those 5 years. It something you don't have to even think about

You're looking at between 4-10K depending on the size of the generator and how much electrical work is involved.
We're in the process (filed paperwork) for having a natural gas line hooked up to our home (we started this prior to Sandy's formation) and intend to install a whole house generator. I believe my DH is considering a 20kw-liquid cooled.
Edited to update... Even though we're switching to natural gas, we may be going with a diesel generator.

this is what we figured. 2500 for the system, 1-2k for install/labor = about 5k.

There were a lot of homes that had the Natural Gas shut off for their own safety, so if they had a natural gas generator, it would have done them no good.

Yes, DH installed/hooked ours up last week. Then the propane company delivered us a bigger tank than what we originally had. There are no gas lines on our block. The propane is also used for our stove top.
We bought it from HD about 5 months after Irene. It ended up being a special order that someone ordered; then backed out. So we were able to get a great deal on it b/c of it.
Otherwise, we probably would have ended up with a portable.

DH is looking into this. He spent all of last week hooking up generators (he's an electrician) that he just wants our house to be ready to go if we should lose power. I think it's a smart (but expensive!) idea.

We have a generac natural gas generator. It runs everything in our house which is about 4,000 sq feet. It is a life saver. Check out Long Island Power in Deer Park for a quote they install and service ours.

We had our electrician install an outside line/plug to our panel so we can plug in our portable generator. I am able to run it about 8-10 hrs on 5 gallons of gas. I can flip breakers to do what I want when I want. Mostly it powers my entire 1st floor. I can run the dishwasher, washing machine, dryer each separate. My TV, fridge & heat are always on.

Yes its considered a permanent fixture & does require a permit. Not sure if all towns are different but ours needs to be inspected by a Fire Marshall after all is said & done. When I called the Assessors Office about taxes increasing; they told me no, not yet.

Yes you do need a permit but I don't believe your taxes will go up.
