DH & I are starting to think about our annual trip. I have heard good things about Belize and was wondering if you ladies have been and can offer any info? I don't really know anything about it and am going to start researching.
We went to Costa Rica a few months ago (Arenal and Tamarindo) and we'd love to go back to see different areas of the country (maybe the Osa peninsula and Manuel Antonio), but Belize is enticing too. Has anyone been to both??
We are not the type to just sit on a beach...we usually do adventures or excursions every day when we travel.
We are looking to either go the last week of March or over the summer.
TIA
ETS: Thanks everyone! We actually decided on another trip to Costa Rica to Manuel Antonio and Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula...super excited! My DH doesn't love to travel internationally (he thinks we'll be abducted or something ). He read too many reports on crime against tourists in Belize...even though I've heard from many people that it is perfectly safe. He actually loved CR and was comfortable there so that's where we're headed Thanks again for your input

Loved Belize. Rented a car and drove the whole coast. I wish I had more details for you but it was a while ago!

We went Belize two years ago and we didn't like it, but we went in a cruise and only stopped there one day. We did an excursion and just felt unsafe on the hour bus ride to the rainforest.

Re: Belize
I went in college for a week with an international photojournalism course... it was incredible! unbelizable! We stayed in San Ignacio, which was no where near the coast, and I spent the week with a mayan medicine man.
As far as going on vacation there, I cant provide much advice, but if you love adventure, we did have one day "off" where we got to tour the ATM cave, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actun_Tunichil_Muknal) and I have to say, to date, it is still one of the most incredible experiences of my life!

I went on my honeymoon. Loved it and would love to move there if I could find the money.
Fm with any questions.
It is a very safe country. Very low crime and everyone speak English. We stayed on ambergris caye and did excursions to the mainland.

I looked quickly online and the cave tubing looks awesome and DH would love to see the Mayan ruins.

Same here. We stopped on a cruise for 1 day and I was very disappointed. The only place I felt safe was right around the port.

I went to Ambergis Caye for my honeymoon. It was wonderful!
We stayed at Pelican Reef Villas. We had a 2 bedroom Villa with 2 balconies, kitchen, and living room. We also had our very own kaundry machine. The property was beautiful and everyone there was so helpful and nice. The woman who owned the hotel was an American who moved there because she loved it so much.
There really are not too many cars on the island. Most people ride bikes or golf carts into town. There are WONDEREFUL restaurants there. We are very into food and my husband used to be a chef. We LOVED the food. The atmosphere is very laid back and people are very nice.
The excursions we went on were: Trip to the ruins- our guids was very knowledgable and was even able to easily spot and name the many different birds and animals in the jungle. Snorkeling at the barrier reef- again the guides were very knowledgable. They came into the water with us and pointed out the many species of marine life...and they knew how to find special ones. THey also brought us to swim with sharks ad giant turtles.
We had a wonderful time. I hear people who visit on cruise ships have a very different experience than those who stay. No one I know who went by cruise liked Belize.

Re: Belize
I have only been once off a cruise, so I didn't get a real experience. We ended up going to the ruins. It was neat! But I would LOVE to go back and go to San Pedro or caye caulker. Lots of great snorkling and diving. And the beach towns are supposed to be really laid back and fun. Everyone I have talked to that has gone, loved it!

DH and I went to Belize City as a cruise stop. We went on a speedboat through the rainforest and to Lamanai. It was beautiful.
