Anyone BF and not pump?

And if so ... how were you ever away from your baby?! I really DON'T want to pump (I just hated it so much with my older DD), but I need to have the freedom to leave the baby sometimes (e.g. I have a meeting at my DD's school on Friday).

I'm guessing I just have to suck it up and pump, but am really hoping that there is some other magical answer!

(FYI, my baby is 12 days old)

I hated pumping. Which was fine since DS refused a bottle. I honestly never really went anywhere without him(and still hardly do at 19 months). But when I do, I just nurse right before and try to not take longer then 2-3 hours.

Re: Anyone BF and not pump?

I pumped in the beginning to get a stash..so I could be away later on...then after a month..I just pumped once a day..every morning...when I was at my fullest..and stopped at 6 months...I prob had 80 bags frozen...so I am good to go for those nights out and don't have to worry about if I will have enough for the sitter! But at 10 mo I haven't touched the pump in about 4 mo ...it feels great...but I worked hard to get my stash big ! Chat Icon

Ugh, I am in the same boat as you. Hated pumping with DD, and really don't want to with this baby (its one of the primary reasons I'm not going back to work for 11 months). But we have a wedding to go to in a few weeks, so it looks like I'm going to have to break out the pump soon. Boo.

i HATED pumping! with a passion..
i rarely did it with DD. so in the very beginning she just came everywhere with me for the most part. looking back it was the first 3 months that were really hard in that way. but i always BF'd her right bfore going out and that would hold her for an hour or 2 if i needed to get out. after that 3 months mark or so she could go for longer stretches so it was easier to leave her. i also started cereal earlier than most (almost 5 months) and felt more at ease that she had another source of food.
it's hard in the beginning but becomes so much easier later on esp. once they are on food.
good luck!

also-with DS (2nd baby) i did pump but only bc i knew i had to go back to work and he needed to know how to take bottles. i hated every pumping moment but did it anyway. it was nice to have that freedom in the beginning that i didn't really have with DD. i pumped enough to have a good freezer stash too.

I pump occasionally and DD has definitely had less than 10 bottles at 6 months. I have a small freezer stash just by pumping once in a while. I've tried to do once a day and that never lasts more than 2-3 days before I get tired of it. Sometimes I go a few weeks without pumping at all. Most of the time I leave DD I just feed her right before I go, whether it's time for a feeding or I just want to top her off. I try to be home in an hour or two and have whoever she's with text me when she fall asleep so I can relax knowing I have another hour. As long as it's just an occasional bottle I wouldn't stress about pumping every day.

Re: Anyone BF and not pump?

I tried pumping with D and I would only get 2-3 oz so I just stopped and I EBF. I the beginning I felt like I was tied down to her but once I was able to get an idea of what type of eater she was (cluster feeder or efficient feeder) I knew what I was able to do. She was efficient, only fed the most for 15 minutes and usually from only side and was good for at least 2.5 to 3 hours.
The little one nursed longer and usually from both sides. Then I tried pumping again and giving her a bottle every other feeding. That just completely messed up my supply and I needed up weaning her at 3 months and went to formula.

Re: Anyone BF and not pump?

I HATED pumping passionately and DD wouldn't take a bottle no matter how many we tried. My social life took a real hit until she was old enough for sippy cups. Even then, I didn't leave her very often or for long stretches.

With this one, I'm going back to work sooner so pumping is necessary. Until then, I'm going to master nursing in public.
