christening advice

i'm due with DD#1 in one week, so from time to time i think of christening plans. if you had a baby in the fall, or if you were going to - would you have them christened right after the holidays or wait until the spring?
originally i was assuming i would do it in january - my niece was born in sept and that's when she was christened... so my dd would be prob 3 months or less, old. but then there's the chance of snow ruining the day.
but i'm not sure if waiting until april or so is too long?
opinions?

also, i know it is something i would have to discuss with my church but i didn't know if anyone on here would know offhand or has any experience with it - can you christen/baptize your child and NOT have godparents? it will be a lutheran church, if that helps.

thank youChat Icon

Will you have guests coming from far away? All of my family is super close by, so I'd probably do it in Jan/Feb. Yes, we get a few snowstorms here and there but rarely anything that completely makes us homebound.

In Catholicism you do need ONE godparent. 2 is optional. But yes, having at least one is necessary. Not sure if Lutheran is the same.

My DS was born on 10/26 and we christened him around 1/7. We had to do it that week because my nephew was the godfather and he was returning to college the following week. We would have done it then anyway--both of my girls were christened by 2 months as well. There was no snow (in a VERY snowy winter! Remember 2 years ago?!) and everything went great!

Re: christening advice

Not quite the same, but DD1 was born after Thanksgiving and we had her baby naming in April. My college roommate had her daughter around the same time, and held the christening in late March. I think it's fine to wait, and you'll have a better shot at good weather.

Re: christening advice

DD was born last November. I chose to have her christening in April. I was having a big party and was concerned about the weather. We ended up having a super mild winter but there was no way for me to know that.

ds #2 was born on 10/21 and we had the christening 12/26. Yes its a chance with the weather but you never know at anytime. If people didn't have to travel to far I wouldn't worry about the snow. It was important to us that the babies be christened early.

Re: christening advice

We both have very small families. Initially, i was just going to keep it as our handful of immediate family members and have an intimate meal after. But dh has a few family members that have mentioned the christening so it made me start thinking of a "bigger" event. It would prob still be only 25 people or so, but the people we'd be inviting on his side live in nassau, queens, manhatten and conneticut and most of them are elderly so while i think it would mean a lot for them to be there, i dont think theyd make the trip to suffolk in poor weather at all, which got me thinking of spring. When i was thinking of my initial idea, and just the immediate family, that's when i was thinking of jan bc weather wasnt much of an issue.

My dd was born Nov. 17, we had her baptism on March 25. We have family from all over so we wanted to wait until the winter was over. We are methodist and godparents are not required. Idk if lutheran is the same, maybe it will be bc they are both protestant??
