btdt Moms- Re: Bedding/Bumpers
I have started looking into bedding for DD and I some sets come with crib bumpers, some dont. Are crib bumpers safe for newborns? or do I not get one until DD is older?

Bumpers are not safe and should not be used. I really don't know they still even bother selling them.

Agreed. The AAP linked bumper use to an increased risk of SIDS, because they block air flow around the crib. When they get older, the can use them as a springboard to escape their crib.

I put mine on as decoration before DD was born and then I put it up on top of her hutch in her nursery for some color way up there. If it hadn't been on clearance for $4, I never would've gotten it. I got my whole entire bedding set for DD for $25!
For DS, I just bought a quilt (which I like to use on the floor or on the glider for now), a sheet, and a pillow and sham from pottery barn kids in the design I like. Definitely don't need a bumper. I use a breathable bumper on DD's crib and will use it on DS's as well (assuming he's too short to launch himself out like she is as he gets older). We just use it to keep her from getting limbs stuck in the slats.

Everyone is going to have their own opinion. I didn't put DD in her crib til she was about 3-4 months old, and I was/still am only using the breathable bumpers. My sister used the bumpers that came with her set only because my nephew kept getting his arm thru the slats and sometimes wound up getting stuck.

I registered for the so that when ds is older I can use them in his crib. I will not be putting them in until he is at least 8-10 months old

Same. Once I can drop the mattress after he becomes more active I'll put it in.

The AAP actually doesn't recommend ANY bumper, even a breathable one. It's something you could just run out and get if you find your child is a wiggler and gets her arms stuck through the slats often. It's not going to help with hitting against the side of the crib, but their heads are hard and they can handle that.

ITA! We got a set and just don't put up the bumpers. They are a waste IMO.

Regular bumpers are not safe...we never used the ones that came with his bedding. Honestly don't even know why we bothered with a set of bedding...only used the sheet and bedskirt. We did get the breathable bumpers and used them until we moved DS into his toddler bed. They aren't sturdy enough for them to stand on for escaping

I used mine for both boys before they went into their crib. DS#1 6 weeks DS#2 8 weeks. Once they went in their crib I used breathable bumpers.

Re: btdt Moms- Re: Bedding/Bumpers
Some people use them and some don't. they say to stop once the baby can roll, but there have been cases where 7 week olds skootched themselves into the bumpers.
I bought a set with separates and didn't get them. I have breathable ones for once they are in cribs and if they tend to wake from their arms and legs hanging out of the bars.

Re: btdt Moms- Re: Bedding/Bumpers
Bumpers are not safe. The lack of circulation of air when using them could cause SIDS.
I've never used bumpers, my kids actually like to sleep right up against the slats of the crib. Not once have they had a bump or bruise from hitting their heads. Nor do their legs or arms get stuck.
