Washing Machines/Dryers
So a month in our house and the Dryer bit the dust tonight. Soooo on to newer and better!! (this dryer must have been near original to the house 15+ years) while we're shopping DH said that we can get a new washing machine as well.
Sooo top loader, front loader, which do you have, love, hate....and most importantly why? Agitator or no agitator? (I think i'm leaning towards a top loader, makes more sense for the laundry room and how it is arranged)
I do not have a membership to consumer reports so I can't look there

Washing Machines/Dryers
I've heard lots of negative comments about front loaders, but I do not have any experience with them. (smells, mildew and alot of extra time to clean the machines etc...) We just bought Samsung Top Loader with dryer, no agitator. Just deliverd about a week ago and haven't moved into our home yet so no feedback. We got them from Best Buy at the labor day sale. You can google lots of information about top loaders vs. front loaders, doing this along with asking friends and other chat baords like this is how I came to my decision.
When you decide on top loading vs. front loading, your next decision will be to choose a brand. You would great deals if you can holdout for the Black friday sales.

I have a front loader (was in the house when we bought) and took a few tips from what I've read online - leave the door slightly open for at least a few hours after removing the clothes so it can dry out. It will reduce the chances of a mildew smell. Make sure you check for stray socks in between the drum and door (there's a rubber gasket there). Get a large white bath towel and once every few weeks put it in with bleach and run a hot quick wash to reduce mildew smells (I rarely do this because I leave the door open a little bit most of the time)
a normal wash for my washer is 49 minutes. i can fit a queen size comforter in mine. personally i think the clothes wash better then a top loader because they can move more freely.

Re: Washing Machines/Dryers
We just bought new Whirlpool washer and dryer. The washer is top load with an agitator. I like it so far. The only thing is once you start the cycle, the door locks, but so far that hasn't been a problem for me (usually I forget to put something in the washer). My SIL got one without an agitator and hates it (I can't think of the brand right now), she said that it did not get her kids' clothes as clean as her old agitator washer.

Re: Washing Machines/Dryers
I would stay away from a front loader, my friends that have them say they smell and leaving it open all the time barely helps and is not practical.
I did alot of research when our washer broke last year. We got the LG Wave series, they are huge, HE, top loader, with no agitator. We were between that and the Maytag Bravos which my mom has and is very happy with. We mainly chose the LG cause we got a better price and it was ready sooner for delivery.

I have had front loader for almost 3 years now and they have never had any issues and NO SMELL. I leave the door open but not wide open (just unlatched). I also though never let clothes sit in my washer. If you do any washer will smell.
I have the Whirlpool Duet and love them. THe dryer is so fast.

We just got a top loader with agitator (kinda old school) since I heard /read some comments about feeling the clothes didn't get clean. I got a GE 3.9cu ft Top loader. Good luck, "cause it's overwhelming!

Re: Washing Machines/Dryers
I had a washing machine without an agitator, Whirlpool, and hated it. It didn't clean like the old ones. I was then getting marks on the clothes and thought it was the washer machine so we returned it and got a regular one with an agitator. It turned out it was the dryer making the marks but I was happy to make the switch.

Same here. I leave the door open and no smell. The only time we had an issue was when I threw a load in and forgot about it and then went away for the weekend but like pp said, any washer would smell in that circumstance. I like them because they're stackable and we were able to move them out of the basement into a space we turned into a laundry area on the first floor.
