What has been your best low budget trip?
I mean a trip where you really were on a budget, but it turned out to be awesome.
We took this crazy trip for our 10th anniversary. DH had been laid off at the time (right after lehman fell etc) so we really didn't have much money but I wanted to take a trip. We decided to drive up to Newport. Since Newport is expensive we actually stayed about 45 minutes outside of Newport. 45 minutes! And drove there every day. Looking back it sounds completely nuts to book a vacation with a built in commute, but we had a GREAT time and I found the drive to/from peaceful and fun.
I don't think we ate at any fancy restaurants. Little seafood places and we did a lot of free stuff while we were there. it was SO much fun and very memorable and we only spent a few hundred bucks

Re: What has been your best low budget trip?
In 2007 DH and I went to aruba for 2 weeks.
We stayed at 2 timeshares- one week was a bonus week from the company so it was basically free. We ate many meals using our kitchen and got the flights for a good deal.
For the 2 weeks, I think we only spent about 1,800 total.

Re: What has been your best low budget trip?
most of my trips are low budget. spending less than $2000 or less each time. las vegas $1000 (dh and I don't gamble, mgm was $40 a night, free show included in stay, another time went to mirage free show and $50/night) aruba Disney stayed at a timeshare. the tickets to disney was the most expensive item. New Jersey wildwood - rented hotel cooked our own food, went out to eat most nights

How long are you thinking of?
Gettysburg can be inexpensive and a few short day getaway.
Lancaster
Baltimore
Washington DC
Boston
You can do most of the cities - and not stay in the most expensive places or if you have a car stay just outside of the city.

I'm just starting a discussion for fun.
I've never been camping. When I was a kid I really wanted to do it. Now not so much, plus i think you can't just go camping..you need to be with someone experienced, right?

We went camping at Jellystone in Lancaster this Summer. Such a blast, but it was def. Not cheap. We stayed in a cabin though.

Re: What has been your best low budget trip?
We have a timeshare with RCI, so I've scored some great last minute deals- like $249 for a week in a 2 bedroom timeshare in places like Virginia- resort with activities, spa, golf and indoor water park.

Some of the mamas were talking about Jellystone cabins at dance the other night. I was working on the laptop at the time and they were across the room so I couldn't hear much but "fun" and "expensive" came up more than a few times. They all said they'd go back.
My best bargain trip was a long weekend stay in DC. Living in Myrtle Beach now, we ARE most people's bargain trip.

Not at all!! Get yourself a tent, sleeping bags, blow up mattress (for comfiness). Find a KOA camp where there are a lot of other people doing the same thing.
Then all of the food pans, utensils etc.
We brought DS when he was around 7 months old, he even had a blast. We went with some friends and just hung out for the weekend.

Re: What has been your best low budget trip?
Camping can be super cheap if you already have supplies or can borrow stuff from someone.
A few years back, DH and I and another couple decided to go on a last-minute weekend trip to Lake George. In August. We thought we'd be paying a lot but wouldn't you know, we found an awesome cottage available for dirt cheap because it wasn't yet booked. That was so much fun!
I've gone to Philly for lots of concerts and that's always a fun, nearby city with cheap hotel options. Boston as well, though it's a little more expensive from my experience.

Re: What has been your best low budget trip?
It was 15 years go, but I backpacked through Europe for under $50/day (minus flight) - this included hostiles/pensions, but we never did dorm style. We always had our room.
I also got a kick ass deal to go to Hawaii when Japan was having an economic crisis and HI tourism was down. We stayed a block fro Waikiki beach and had a blast.

Re: What has been your best low budget trip?
I always like going on what I call "Staycations" where we go to a place that is nearby but stay overnight. These usually end up running us about $250 for a night or two. I think these are a great alternative to expensive vacations. Luckily I live in Massachusetts, so we take a Boston Vacation once every few years.

Re: What has been your best low budget trip?
My favorite low budget trips were to Europe. I traveled to Europe on low budgets when I was in college. I would fly to London for $200 pre 9/11. Airfare alone makes Europe not low budget anymore.
Some of my favorite cheaper vacations: Boston, S Maine, Philadelphia, DC, AZ and New Mexico.
I also think FL if you are not doing theme parks can be very low budget.

Re: What has been your best low budget trip?
DH and I drove down to DC for a weekend, we stayed at a hotel that we purchased with credit card points, got to all the attractions via the metro which was not expensive, and most of the museums are free!

Re: What has been your best low budget trip?
we didn't do it budget, but totally can. Isla Mujeres. If you find cheap flights to cancun and stay at a small boutique inn on the island, you can probably do 5 nights for under $1000 for 2. And then the restaurants there were all very reasonable. And there are some very cheap options for food.
Another trip I loved was the finger lakes. We stayed at a holiday inn for 2 nights and drove around visitng the vineyards and breweries. it was a nice weekend getaway!

Wildwood, NJ
DH and I went for 4 days early on in our relationship and we had a BLAST! We stayed in a cheap motel and played in the arcade most of the time but we were like 20 years old and just had the best time!

I'd say Montauk--not much travel cost. Fire Island usually costs us more than Montauk otherwise I would pick that.
