Getting a haircut at someone's home
A girl I knew from High School just got her Hair license and cuts hair on the side. She is doing my hair on Monday, nothing crazy, just a trim. I don't know what she is charging me, probably would've been smart to ask, but do you tip on top of that? Since it's off the books, I didn't know what was customary?

Re: Getting a haircut at someone's home
DH used to go to someone on her home. She charged more than a good barber would but she did expect tips. She complained about people who did not tip (unprofessional but she was a gossip). On the other hand, I used to use someone who came to my house and I felt she was worth more than she charged. She tried to not accept my tips but I insisted. So I am not sure if there is a norm for this. See how you like it and how much she charges.

Getting a haircut at someone's home
I wouldn't tip going to someone's house (unless the cut itself was inexpensive), but I would tip if someone came to me.

Getting a haircut at someone's home
I used to get my hair cut & colored at a family friend's house. I would always tip. I wasn't super careful about what the % was though. She only took cash so I'd just give whatever the change was (if she charged $70 and i only had 20s, i would give $80, etc). So yes i would tip but the % would depend on what i had on me. I went to her for years and i don't really think she expected any tip, so i felt like whatever I gave was appreciated. It was very informal.

Re: Getting a haircut at someone's home
I have gotten my hair done in the past by two different women who worked out of their homes. The first I followed to her home when she left her salon. She continued to charge what was charged at the salon and I (sorta stupidly) still tipped her 20% because I felt obligated. I loved how she did my hair so it wasn't that big of a deal. She started flaking out too much about booking apts so I stopped using her.
The second is ehh but the price was super cheap. I would always give her 20% also but in this case I still felt like I was robbing her compared to what a salon would charge for the same.
I waitressed in high school and college so I always tip a minimum of 20% or greater. I might not be the best point of reference!

Re: Getting a haircut at someone's home
My old hair dresser left a salon and her hubby built a mini-salon in their garage. I still always tipped her.

Maybe it is just me, but I treat it like you would the owner of a company and don't tip. They are getting 100% of what they are charging you and its not like in a salon where they are working for the tips. But that being said I don't believe it is bad to tip.

I would never tip someone working off the books! she isnt even paying taxes on it. All the money goes in her pocket.

My girl opened a salon in her garage. I don't tip. She would never accept it so I stopped offering.

Normally i would agree with this
however, the woman i go to charges such a low amount for her services that i WANT to tip her She saves me literally $$$ a year! If i used to spend $180 every 6 weeks, i now spend $60 so to me, that is worth giving her a tip. And i know she works her butt off, has no other income and actually needs the money. Plus, i like her, so i want to tip her for the good job she does, and to show my appreciation for her work

Re: Getting a haircut at someone's home
Thank for all your advice. I ended up tipping her because I felt weird not- she spent over an hour cutting/styling my hair and I can honestly say it was the best haircut I ever got. She only charged me $15, and I gave her $25. I was going to just give $20 but I was so comfortable with her and like I said I loved the cut!
If I had gone into a salon, with tip I would've spent $50+

Getting a haircut at someone's home
I get my hair cut at a woman's house and I don't tip. She isn't super cheap, but cheaper than the salon she works at charges. If she charged a really cheap price, then I might consider throwing in a few dollars.

This exactly, since we go to the same person. I only get my haircut twice per year, and she charges me $25, so I always tip her.
