What kind of bottles to get?

What kind of bottles do you plan on using? I registered for a dr. Browns gift set, but my friend told me they are a pain to clean because of multiple parts. Also, what kind of nipples do u need? I see they have different levels and what not...

Re: What kind of bottles to get?

I would get a couple of different bottles because you don't know what your baby will "take" to. And some of them are better for colic, gas than others. We started with Tommee Tippee and I hated them - the nipples kept collapsing. Then we tried Dr. Brown's, but I didn't like them either - and there are a lot of parts to them, like you said.
We finally tried (and stuck with) Avent bottles.
ETA: You start off with #1 nipples (they are usually on the smaller size bottles for newborns). That is a slow flow nipple. Then you switch to the faster flow nipples as they get older and you increase the ounces.

Re: What kind of bottles to get?

I'm using rtf at first then dr browns. I figure so many people switch to them anyway so why fight it. They are supposidly ok if you rinse them after use. And I googled a tip for dishwashing where you put the straw on a dishwasher peg with the bottle over it so they both get washed.

What kind of bottles to get?

We started with playtex drop-ins and playtex wide neck ventaires last time. At right around 11 weeks DD just completely flipped out while I was feeding her and REFUSED to take another bottle. I had a set of 3 Dr. Brown's at home and just tried one on the off chance she'd take it and lo and behold, she did! I switched then and never looked back. Yes, it is slightly annoying to clean them, but I went and splurged on the microwave sterilizer this time so I can just give them a quick clean with soap and hot water, rinse them, then pop them in the microwave instead of running them through the dish washer or scalding my hands every night scrubbing them, and I'm super excited about that! I love the Dr. Brown's and we never had any issues with reflux or anything.

Some babies like different types of bottles. If you're planning to BF and FF, they suggest using wide-neck bottles. By the time we had the freak-out incident at 11 w, DD was EFF because I never got a milk supply. She was an expert latcher, too, but I was starving her trying to EBF. Such is life! She thrived on the formula!

The only thing about the Dr. Brown's is that you can't really mix formula in them unless you buy the white flat caps separately since you can't shake them with the lids only. I had the Dr. Brown's formula mixing pitcher which is a MUST if you're going to FF IMHO. I could make 1/2 a day's worth of formula or a whole day's worth at once and let the bubbles fizzle out on their own without having to add gas drops or anything into the bottles, which I really liked.

As far as the nipples go, you start with the Level 1s (or slow flow depending on brand) and after a few weeks if you find the baby is taking a really long time to finish a bottle, you can start to switch up to the next level. If the baby is spitting up or choking, it's too soon. If a bottle was taking 45 minutes and then is taking 15 minutes, then it's the right time. Usually around every 3 months you switch up a level.

This too. I registered for a gift set of dr browns and I'll try them. That way Im not stuck with 20 bottles I can't use if both or one hates them. I think I also registered for the avent. I don't remember.

What kind of bottles to get?

I used Born Free glass bottles and Dr. Brown's glass bottles. Dd prefered Born Free. We had to go up a level in nipples when we had to start adding cereal to her bottles for reflux.

Re: What kind of bottles to get?

Has any heard of comotomo bottles?, I've been trying to find a chemical free bottles where the nipples are somewhat close to breastfeeding, because I really plan to breastfeed but when I go back to work someone else will need a bottle to feed her breast milk. I thought these looked pretty good for those purposes but I didn't know if anybody else had heard of them or tried them...let me know :)

jus183- that looks interesting - silicone bottles.....

with ds I got dr browns glass then couldn't stand the parts and got born free glass.

with dd I just ordered Pura - stainless steel baby bottles..... unlike the other SS which has plastic for the ring connector pura has a metal piece. Their bottles work with: Thinkbaby, Born Free, and Dr. Brown's wide mouth nipples so I ordered a couple of each to see which will work best.

Re: What kind of bottles to get?

Depends on whether you're BFing or FFing. Some are better for BFing than others.

I EBF and have First Years Breastflow and Playtex Drop Ins (the wide neck ones, I think).

eta: don't go crazy buying all different nipple types yet. Figure out what kind of bottle you and your baby like, then take it from there.
