Cough at night due to allergies?

Over the last two weeks or so, DD (almost 3) has been coughing only at night. She sometimes wakes up and asks for some water and then goes back to bed. I took her to the ped a few days ago and he said he suspects allergies after listening to her. He also she has some dark circles under her eyes which also leads him to believe its allergies. Iv'e also noticed that she coughs sometimes after running around so the ped said to give her nebulizer treatments as needed and allergy medicine (either zyrtec or allegra) at night. I'm hoping it is in fact just allergies but wouldn't she have other symptoms such as sneezing or watery eyes? Is it possible that her only allergy symptom is coughing?

Any info/feedback would be appreciated! Thanks.

Cough at night due to allergies?

Post nasal drip can lead to the coughing at night. It happens to me plenty!! 99% of the time that's my symptom, rarely do my eyes.and nose itch (unless the pollen count is super high)

Re: Cough at night due to allergies?

I have awful allergies (as does SD) and we hardly ever sneeze or have watery eyes (mine itch sometimes when I'm wearing my contact lenses). The cough is always worse at night due to the drip. It's also worse when the heat it on. Our allergies have been acting up the last week or so, I think from the trees. We take a zyrtec every night, sleep with either the AC or humidifier on, and also use saline spray every so often.

Yes, this.
DD gets this cough from a post nasal drip. Ped said we could give benadryl- they told us the dose.
It worked like a charm

DD gets an allergy induced asthma that only causes a cough (I can't hear her wheezing) and the cough comes out mostly at night as well - during the day she is fine. The nebulizer helps with it though.

She also has the dark circles.

Thank you! I have been giving some allergy medication at night. I am also going to put a humidifier in her room to see if that helps.

Re: Cough at night due to allergies?

The pollen counts have been out of control the last few weeks. Early hay fever season too. My son gets the same cough at night. I give him a dose of children's claritin during the day on bad days... It helps. He sleeps with the ac on and I try to limit his outdoor time during bad days..
