Fake nails

Those with fake nails, do you get silk wraps or acrylic? I was going to a place for years and always got the wraps. I decided I had to change places and they used acrylic which I really never had before. What do most of you have?

Re: Fake nails

I just got an extension set today to try something different and I have total buyer's remorse. They used powder, but I am going to get them off in 2 weeks and go back to opi gel or shellac on my real nails (which are super short right now).

How is the gel and shellac on real nails? I am a nail biter and have short nails, which is why I went back to the fake nails recently.

Re: Fake nails

i used to always get gel/powder which I guess is a form of acrylic?

now I get gel manicures - my nails grow long just like if I had acylics and less cost, less abusive to my nails.

shellac is VERY gentle. laquer is VERY harsh since it is much harder to get off. stick with shellac products!

Re: Fake nails

Had acrylic for about 10 years. Recently went to silk, which I had for a short time many years ago. I'm happy with both but on the silk, the polish seems to stay on the top edge better.

When you go to a place they really should follow what you already had unless you ask for a change.

Although people will swear up and down that the UV lights are safe, I am not totally comfortable with them even thoug I tried them.

I've only done shellac once and I think it may have just been the place I went to, but I wasn't crazy about it. I'm definitely willing to try it again somewhere else.

I've never had any issues with opi gel. Over time my nail bed got a little weak but I feel like that happens with all nail products. I've always had really short nails and gel type products are the only way my nails grow.

Re: Fake nails

Nail biter here.

I've been doing silk wraps forever, I like the way they look and last. I have an excellent manicurist.
I haven't tried anything else and certainly don't want to try anything where I have to stick my hands into a UV machine. Not worth the skin cancer risk.

I have acrylic. And I do perm french. I've tried silk wraps and the gels/shellac etc but I am too hard on my hands and they always end up breaking. Acrylic has been the only thing that holds up for me. And, I go to a fantastic woman so they don't look as "fake" as the ones I've gotten in the past from certain nail salons. I love the natural look she is able to achieve.

This is exactly me. I am a nail biter, which is why I need something over my nails. I was doing silk wraps for years, but had to change the salon I was going to. Now that I go to a new salon, they put on acrylic. I also want to avoid the UV machine. Can I ask where you go?

I go to Christie's in Bayside. It's full service salon, but I only do my nails there.
I can go three weeks between fill ins.

Thanks. Too far for me. I do like the wraps better than what I have now. Tried doing manicures and after a few weeks started the biting again. I have to have something on, it seems.

Re: Fake nails

I had gel permanent french (not sure what the diff is between this an acrylic) for over a year, and now I don't do the white line, i just do plain and polish it. I actually have naturally very strong nails, but I like that I can go for 3 weeks without doing anything. I'm worried about the UV rays though, so I'm thinking eventually I should stop. I work from home, so I really don't NEED my nails done. but I do like that if I get called in for a meeting or something, my nails always look perfect
