Flu Shot
What is everyone doing about the flu shot this year? I am due in February and if I wait till then it's too late to get it. My doc gave me the go ahead to get the regular flu shot but I have heard about a flu shot that is mercury free. My doc doesn't offer it so I would have to find somewhere that does. Thoughts?

Flu Shot
I got mine the month before I was due with DD (she was born early January). I plan to get it while pregnant again this time so some of the immunity will transfer to the baby. It's on my list of things to ask today at my 34 w appointment.

Re: Flu Shot
I got the flu shot last september when I was pregnant - I asked for the mercury-free one as per my ob/gyn's orders, and was told that they(this was at walgreens) cannot give anything BUT the mercury free one to pregnant women.

Re: Flu Shot
I'm due in October, and I can't decide if I should get the shot while I'm still pregnant, or if I should wait until the baby is born and pass the immunity on to my baby through breastfeeding, any thoughts?

Re: Flu Shot
I got the flu shot both times I was pregnant. DD #1 was born in March and DD#2 in February. I felt it was very important.

DD was born oct 16th and I waited till I delivered...they gave it to me in the hospital.

I got a mercury free shot with both pregnancies. With my first, I was in the 3rd trimester and with my second pregnancy, I was in the first trimester.

I was told last time that the immunity would not transfer to the baby so I skipped it. Did your doctor tell you otherwise? I wonder what the real answer is!
My OB NEVER mentioned it last time until I asked about it myself. I was then told that while it is recommended for pregnant women, their office doesn't give it (I found that odd if they want you to have it) and I can get it from my regular medical doctor. After being unable to locate anywhere that carried the mercury free vaccines I opted to skip it.

Flu Shot
I've never had the flu shot. I had the flu once really badly back in 2001 and haven't had it since so I wonder if I built up an immunity. But I did hear you're supposed to get it while pregnant. I just don't like the idea of adding a dose of an illness I haven't gotten in 11 years into my body.

Re: Flu Shot
the only time I have ever gotten a flu shot is while pregnant. I was pregant with DS the winter of 09, spring 2010 when the whole H1N1 ordeal was going on. Got the H1N1 vaccine too.

flu strains change every year - new vaccines every year.

Maybe they don't really know. I was told by both my OB and the midwife at our practice that both the flu and the pertussis protection will transfer at least somewhat to the baby for a few months and it's safer for them if you can get it towards the end of your pregnancy.
I'm going to my GP today to get both shots. Several years ago I had the flu and almost ended up in the hospital because of it so now with a newborn coming and a 20 m/o I'm doing whatever I can to protect myself.

My doctor just yesterday told me it would transfer to the baby (she said she'd be protected for 3 months once she's out of me - I'm due in mid-October).

Re: Flu Shot
Interesting! If I can find a mercury free shot I just might get it this year. I hate getting a vaccine while pregnant but I definitely work in a high risk environment. I've been lucky so far not to pick it up but I know it can be brutal if you do.

Re: Flu Shot
I am just so confused...I spoke with my PCP today (my OB doesn't offer the flu shot) and he said that all flu shots are mercury free. That would explain why my OB said that I could get the flu shot when it's offered where I work. Is there really another kind of flu shot for pregnant women? I am waiting to hear from my OB because I am so confused right now

Flu Shot
I got it today at my GP's office (my OB doesn't have them there and said to go to my GP). They said it was perfectly safe for a pregnant woman but isn't considered mercury free. I'm not worried about it. I got the same one last time I was pregnant and DD is great.

Re: Flu Shot
I don't usually get the flu shot so I won't get it pregnant.
The only time I have gotten it was after I had my twins, they were in the NICU and the nurses strongly suggested we all got it. (Dh and my parents got it too)

Flu Shot
I got a "preservative free" flu shot. My OB said they save them for pregnant women.
Also - I don't usually get the flu shot, but given pregnancy lowers your immune system AND it will protect the baby (esp if giving birth during flu season, as I will!), it only makes sense to get one, IMO.
