Breastfeeding

I never wanted to breastfeed, but recently I'm having thoughts that I might try for a little while. My mom didn't breastfeed, nor did my sister, or any of my close friends who just had babies. So, I don't really have anyone to ask about this. I'm not so concerned about the arguments of which is better, but more of what I should get if I decide to try it out.

Please share what you are registering for (or you've used in the past) if you are breastfeeding! I'm 100% clueless on this! I want to stay away from expensive pumps because if I breastfeed, it will probably only be for 6 weeks or so. TIA!

Re: Breastfeeding

I breastfed DD (actually, I just stopped 6 days ago and she's 17 months old!) and I plan to bf this one too.

The beginning is very, very hard. Your nipples are sore, you don't know if the baby is getting enough, you never sleep...but to me, it was so worth it!

As for registering, I did not register for a pump because I didn't know how bfing would work out so I figured I'd wait and see. I also didn't register for other bfing things because I just thought it was weird - like here, I bought you some nipple cream as a gift. What I did have was lansinoh nipple cream and pads and nursing tanks to start with. You'll have no clue what size bra to buy before you start bfing - your boobs will be huge! The tanks were great in the beginning so I'd stick with just those.

Good luck! Even if you don't have friends and family to reach out to with questions, you can always ask here. I've found LIF to be so helpful with bfing.

Breastfeeding

Look into renting a pump instead of buying one in case it doesn't work out.

Re: Breastfeeding

If you're only planning to BF for a few weeks, there's really nothing you need except lanolin cream and breast pads (disposable or reusable). A nursing bra or tank is also helpful for easy access. (Regular underwire bras can cause problems). I'd also recommend buying/borrowing a BFing book like The Nursing Mother's Companion or The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. Great info in both, which is really helpful, esp since you don't have a mother/sister/friend to call.

Re: Breastfeeding

I would also recommend going to a BF class and find a Lactation consultant to speak to for when you come home from the hospital. They are invaluable.
Its hard in the beginning and you will want to give up. Just don't, try it again, and again.
If you do decide to get a pump go electric cause that is a pain as my SIL tells me. Check with your insurance because they may pay for it or a portion of it. I did and i got it for $20! no one tells you TG for the ladies on LIF.

I had alot of issues and the LC was on my speed dial. 3mo later im still doing it and its been hard but better than anything.

Good luck.

Call Edgepark to see if a pump is covered under your insurance. I'm unsure about breast feeding too, but I got my pump 100% paid for through my insurance, so no harm is done if I don't use a lot. Gl

Call your insurance company first and see if they cover one for free though!

Re: Breastfeeding

I bfed both of my boys. Adriano for 1 year and Gabriel for 9 months. The 3rd one will only get 6 months because of me going abck to work. The 1st time around was extremely difficult for me but the 2nd time around was a breeze! I used ther Medela pump, the one that come sin a backpack. It was easy to travel with and pump at work. I used all of the medela products that goes with the pump. Good luck!
