Bassinet/crib dilemma

Hello,
We are living in a 1-bedroom apartment that we just put on the market. We won't be able to buy a house til it sells. We're not sure when it will sell; could be when baby is a newborn, could take as long as he/she is 9 months old!

My question is this, do I

(1) get a traditional bassinet, then when baby outgrows, if we're still in apt, do a complete overhaul of our apt. to try to make room for a minicrib, or

(2) from the start just get a co-sleeper bassinet (I'd use as a free-standing bassinet) and hope that that fits the baby up until about 9 mos old? Anyone with experience with a co-sleeper traditional (not mini) that could tell me how long they were able to keep their baby in it? I'd get the wood sleigh one that looks like a crib.

Thank you for your advice and suggestions!

Take a look at the Stokke crib that starts out small and you add pieces to it.

We're in a 1 bdrom apt until LO is going to be 7 months old. I'm planning on buying a swing to double as a bassinet. Then we'll put a crib in our bedroom and the dresser/changing table in the living room. Our apt is really big, though.

Do you have room for a crib in the bedroom? Or can you split furniture b/c your bedroom and the LR?

i would say get the rock n play sleeper. that will work for many months. we didnt put DD in a crib til she was 8m old. she slept great in the RNP and it folds up. if you are still in the apartment by the time you are ready for a crib deal with it then.

Re: Bassinet/crib dilemma

We have room if we move out some other furniture (i.e. we might have to move out our bookcase or table into storage), so I'm trying to avoid that. A mini crib would JUST fit in our bedroom, though very tightly.

Re: Bassinet/crib dilemma

i also have a similar dilemma, we are having twins and are in a 1 bedroom, which we will also try to sell but who knows how long that will take with this economy!

our bedroom can fit one full sized crib or two mini cribs. At first i was thinking of using the mini cribs until i read that if you have long babies they will grow out of the crib quicker than if they were in a regular crib. Also, most mini cribs do not convert and the ones that do only go to toddler beds. (not full sized)
DH and I are both tall people so i didnt want to take the chance and i wanted to get something that will last. So now, we're gonna start with one crib...if we dont move when its time to separate them we will have to buy a 2nd crib and put both into the living room. We will have to move some things into storage if that happens.

Re: Bassinet/crib dilemma

I'm not familiar with the full size co-sleeper bassinet, but we used the mini one. It was good until DS was sitting up and then I was nervous he might fall out because, if I'm remembering correctly, I couldn't lower the mattress. I would suggest not spending too much money, since you're not sure what your situation will be - could you manage with a pack and play with a bassinet feature. The baby could easily stay in that until you move and if it looks like the place is never going to sell, then invest in a mini crib or something like that (at that point, you'll also have a better sense of what your baby sleeps best in).

i've also read that many people use pack n plays in their room for awhile before transitioning into a crib. Maybe that would work? its much smaller than a crib

Re: Bassinet/crib dilemma

I am a huge fan of the graco travel lite crib. Its like a mini pack and play, same size as mini co-sleeper, but it has wheels so you can take it from room to room with you. DD slept in our room for 4 months in that, but we brought it into the living room, bathroom when showering, etc. Then we used it for travel. You don't need a real crib right away, you can use this for a while.

she didn't until around 9m. we had already switched her for sleeping purposes but we still used it in our living room during the day. she was able to sit completely up in it. then one day she leaned too far over and tumbled out the front (not sure why the belt didn't stop that, she was WAY below the weight limit). its so close to the ground that she was fine, but that was the last time we used it.

for the time period you will be using it i really wouldn't worry about a baby climbing out of it. besides maybe a pack n play, no matter what you are using by 7,8,9m you'll need to switch out of it. anyway.

Bassinet/crib dilemma

DD slept in the rock n play exclusively for 9 months. It was when she started to sit up in it (we ALWAYS buckled her in, from birth on) that we transitioned her to the crib. I don't plan to use it for quite that long this time, but we do plan to use it for the first few months. DD never ever fell out of it. In fact, we still stick her in it sometimes when we're in the shower so she has a place to hang out in the bathroom (I let her walk around and play, but DH likes her contained lol) and she's 19 months, just about 25 lbs (which is the weight limit) and she's STILL never tipped it or fallen out. It's a really convenient piece of baby equipment! Great for travel too.
