Re: Would you have your child miss school for a concert?
Posted by Arieschick29 I think many of the posts about taking kids out of school for vacations and trips and visits etc shows just how low education is on America's priority list.
I agree 100% and I am both a parent AND a teacher.

I am a parent and a teacher and I wouldn't hestitate to take my kids out for vacations or a special event...........in the grand scheme of a child's education, missing a week or a few days here or there is not the end of the world. I highly value education but I also recognize that it's not the worst thing to pull my kids out of school on occasion if need be.
My parents did it with me for Disney vacations and there were no negative effects from missing a few days. I made up my work and moved on. Honestly, big vacations cost a great deal of $$$ and I personally don't want to go on costly vacations on just school breaks and summer vacations when things are jammed pack and overrun.

OK getting off my now
THIS debate again? Kids go to school for 12+ years, a few days for vacation or a concert, etc. isn't going to break their education. Nor does it say that parents don't think education is important.

no. of course not. but I do think it shows the younger generations that our priorities are saving money on flights to go to Disney during school sessions and not the fact that attendance is mandatory except for illness or truly extreme circumstances.
Im sure parents dont think a day here or a week there does any harm, but as a teacher who needs to go out of the way to give work or make up tests etc, its a PITA.

Would you have your child miss school for a concert?
I would just take her out early. We took DD to the concert in Feb. and it was so much fun!!!!! It is worth it, think of it as a cultural field trip lol!
ETA: I am also a parent AND a teacher. If the parent understands that the child is responsible for any work they miss I see no problem with taking a half a day or day. I don't like when kids take an entire week or two off, but that is up to the parents. If the kids don't make up the work, I fail them, vacations are not an excuse, I let the parents know that in advance.

Re: Would you have your child miss school for a concert?
I would take her! Can she go to school in the morning and leave early? We took DS out of school last year for 4 days (he was also in kindergarten). We had a wedding in Florida. At first I didn't know if it was the right thing but honestly, it was worth it for the memories! We def won't make a habit of it and I felt that it was better to do it now than when he is in the higher grades.
