WWYD Hire Movers OR Move yourself?
Here is our situation and what needs to move:
We live with MIL and have 2 rooms of stuff in Lake Grove.
We have one 10x10 storage unit in Centerach.
We also have stuff stored in FIL's basement in Ozone Park (room is about 8x15, but it's not all our stuff, maybe 3/4)
We are moving EVERYTHING to our new home in Baiting Hollow.

WWYD?
Hire movers? If so, from where (location, not company)? Queens, East End, in-between?
Move yourself?
DH would prefer to hire movers, only b/c our last move (from a 2BR apt) was attrotious (mostly b/c we had NO help)
TIA

Re: WWYD Hire Movers OR Move yourself?
I would hire movers.
Moving is stressful enough and it sounds like you have a lot of stuff, including furniture and bigger items. How many trips would you need to make to move everything? Do you have a big truck? Do you have a lot of people who could help? If you hire professional movers, you can focus on the packing and unpacking and not stress about people damaging your items or hurting themselves in the move. I'd think it's well worth the money.
But that's just me - unless is were a just a few boxes, I would always hire movers. I don't think it matters if you hire a moving company based on Long Island or Queens.... it's all pretty local.

Can you move some of the smaller boxes on your own? Maybe just have the mover do the large furniture.

Re: WWYD Hire Movers OR Move yourself?
Thanks for the reply.
We'd rent a truck (16-17'). I've looked up pricing for p/u near Lake Grove (where we are now) as it's central. The stinky part is having to pay for mileage.
We have had a number of people offer to help us move - I'm just afraid they won't be available when we need them. Add to it - I'm 7 mos pregnant so I can't help
I was contemplating moving Lake Grove & Centereach stuff in one move (one day) and then making a trip to Queens to get everything there.
I just don't want to pay $$$ for movers.

What's tough is there is big stuff in Lake Grove and in storage unit in Centerach.

Can you have movers move the stuff form storage & where you are now, and get the stuff from Queens yourself later?
Also, does your storage place have a moving service. Sometimes they do?

WWYD Hire Movers OR Move yourself?
Hire movers for sure. When my husband and I moved down here with just our furniture from our apartment and we moved ourselves. It was a total nightmare because we had no help as well. I vowed I would gladly pay to never experience anything like that again.
As for companies I am not up there. Hopefully some others have recommendations for you. Good Luck!

Re: WWYD Hire Movers OR Move yourself?
I'd rent a truck & pick up some day workers to help with the big stuff and then whatever smaller stuff you can. It winds up being a LOT cheaper (I did my entire move for about $250 including truck and help). And, if you need a 2nd day, it'd still prob wind up being cheaper. Plus, you control how much you pay. Just have it all ready to go when you get the truck & pick the guys up.

Re: WWYD Hire Movers OR Move yourself?
I would hire movers.
We moved ourselves into our current apartment and we barely had any furniture - just couches and mattress set.
We had to rely on our friends and family to take off of work and help us all day. It was hard work and then we treated everyone to lunch (of course) and then took them out to a nice dinner as a thank you.
When it was all said and done, we wish we had gotten movers. It wasn't really fair to ask people to use their vacation days or days off to help us.
Edited to add: Professional movers have the best dollies/handtrucks that make moving so much easier. They also know how to do it without damaging things. My brother in law created a lot of damage unintentionally trying to be helpful and quick.
Never again.

I would get some quotes, it may be less than you think. It doesnt sound like a lot of stuff, so if it is $$ my husband would just grab a buddy to help.

You're pregnant, right? And you have a child?
HIRE SOMEONE!! It'll be faster and easier than trying to haul all that stuff yourselves.

Yes and yes.
If DH (& friends) did the move, it'd more than likely be while DS is at camp & I'm at work.
I got my 1st quote from movers, to do it all (Queens, storage & current living place) $1500!!!!!

Get some more quotes and see how they compare. JMO here, but I'd give those people anything but my firstborn. We moved from a tiny two-bedroom apt to a house by ourselves (pre-baby), and it royally sucked. Never again!

I am contemplating getting quotes for just Lake Grove & Centereach - Queens is just too much mileage. The 1st quote I rec'd was for 9 hrs moving +2 hrs travel - the place was based out of Floral Park.
