Re: Since I'm new to this...question about pumping

Why can't you pump at work? If you work in NY, your employer is legally required to give you time and space (not a bathroom) to pump. Schools have empty classrooms, offices, conference rooms, etc, so you should be fine.
ITA and as for the custodians, lock the door and use a cover. If they do come in just be sure you're covered and tell them quickly and nicely to come back later.

Since I'm new to this...question about pumping
I like the idea of using an empty classroom or your car if it comes down to it. I hate the idea of pumping in a bathroom, that just seems so unsanitary. I'm sorry you're having a tough time with this, it's not fair that in 2012 women still have to worry about these things!
eta- If you're using an empty classroom or office, I would block the window and put a big sign on the door saying "Privacy Needed, Do Not Enter". I'd also maybe sit with the back of my chair against the door so if anyone does to to enter they won't be able to. Good luck to you!

Try hooter hiders or a similar breastfeeding cover. You can use it BFing or Pumping. Your employer should provide a clean comfortable place. They don't need an exclusive pumping room. Is there a female you can talk to? That just may be more comfortable.

Since I'm new to this...question about pumping
I hear you about not wanting to pump at school. I'm not pumping at work either because the thought of getting walked in on, even in a locked room is just too stressful. plus, I am in an NYC school with lots of critters and that grosses me out too! I totally feel your pain!

Since I'm new to this...question about pumping
FTR...I work with several men from a very conservative Hasidic Jewish population and when I was pumping at work I spoke to quite a few of them about their wives BFing. They ALL did. You might be surprised at how supportive/accommodating they are for you. But please don't NOT BF because you're afraid to ask!
If you don't pump at work, you won't be able to EBF. Especially going back at 6 weeks. But you can BF at home and supplement when you're at work.

Re: Since I'm new to this...question about pumping
Crashing - Colleen, BFing AND pumping are VERY common in Orthodox Judaism. I have several Orthodox friends who went to school while they were new moms (they went to Stern, which is an Orthodox college in the city) and would go to class late because they had to pump...and this was perfectly acceptable. I can go into further explanation if you want to FM me but I can almost guarantee you that they will be supportive of you needing to pump and I highly doubt you are the first new mom on faculty that will have done this.

Re: Since I'm new to this...question about pumping
My sister is a teacher and nursed all 3 of her babies. She would pump in the car at lunch and during her preps. She managed to nurse each baby for about 18 months.
