1200$ electric bill for 2 months
Is that normal? We live in a 4 bedroom house with window/wall unit a/c's. One is on 24/7 (home office). Two are only on at night.(BR's), one is on and off multiple times a day, and one is on only when it is too hot down stairs.. It only cools half the down stairs... I almost freaked when I heard the price today.. We were paying about 400$ a month before this!!! Is it because of the hot weather and all the a/c we are using or could there be something wrong?

Re: 1200$ electric bill for 2 months
how big is your house??
even 400 sounds crazy high to me..we pay on average 60-100/month..we've been using the a/c about 12/24 hours a day lately, and even then our bill has only been 100 (which still frustrates me lol)

It seems high to me, as well. However, we are also on balanced billing.

Re: 1200$ electric bill for 2 months
My first bill in my new home was $700! I also freaked, yelled at LIPA etc. It was right. I have an IG pool and CAC, small 3 bedroom ranch. We switched to balance billing and it was awesome.

Holy crap!! We have central air in a ranch and our bill for 2 months was $459.
ETA: $400 a month seems high. Maybe you should purchase some newer high efficiency air conditioners.

Re: 1200$ electric bill for 2 months
I'm billed monthly and my latest bill was $395. We have CAC running 24/7, and our house is 1880 sq ft.
For those with balanced billing??? While its great that you pay the same amount each month and it takes the shock out of a big bill in the summer months, isn't it averaged out at the end of the year and you are billed (or refunded) the difference? Your still paying for the electricity you use, whether you do it as you use it or play catch up at the end of the year.

Unfortunately, it's probably right. I have a large home, central air and a pool and my June -July bill is usually $1400. I definately feel your pain.

yes. for most people, it is easier to swollow $100 per month vs. lower winter months and spikes in the summer.
ETA - from LIPA
Balanced Billing Program
Balanced Billing divides your annual electricity usage into 12 balanced payments. This spreads out seasonal costs over the entire year so you avoid sudden spikes in your bill. We review your account throughout the year to make sure your monthly installment amount is in line with your actual usage.
Program Highlights Spread out your energy costs over the year & budget your household expenses Balanced Billing divides your annual electricity usage into 12 even payments. At the end of your billing year, any difference between total payments and your actual energy costs will be added to -- or subtracted from -- your last bill of the budget year.
Your payment amount can change – for example, if you use significantly more or less electricity than projected. If it does change, we’ll let you know on the bill before the change happens. Over the course of a year on the plan, you will always pay only for the actual amount of electricity you have used – no more, no less.

No, we were paying $149 a month, and they just recently upped it to $175 a month. They do adjust during the year based on usage so you don't get stuck with a huge bill at the end...

Re: 1200$ electric bill for 2 months
We have balanced billing I think. I will have to ask my brother. He is in charge of that bill. Which may be the problem... Thank you for the information. We have a small pool 12 x30 with a small pump. I doubt that is the problem.. This sucks!

Re: 1200$ electric bill for 2 months
Check the bill and make sure it was an actual reading that was done and not estimated. Our bill had been $400/mo summer with CAC running last year. In an effort to conserve we got a fan for our bedroom and keep CAC temp higher at night and we are at $300/mo summer.

1200$ electric bill for 2 months
We pay $125/mo. w/ balanced billing. We have a ranch w/ 3 BR, CAC, a 12x18 AGP. I'd rather pay a smaller amount each month than get stuck with a large bill for a few months.

Is the meter reading an estimate on the bill? Double check that. It might not be the actual use. If it is an estimate, call them and give them the reading off the meter so they can adjust it.

Re: 1200$ electric bill for 2 months
We don't have balanced billing. We are on a payment plan... Apparently when my brother switched from their old place to the new place, he was still paying off a hefty bill. Since we moved in after they did (we all live in one big house), the electric bill is in his name now. I guess we can have it transferred over to our name now. I still can't believe it doubled in 2 months..

One month was $600. We started conserving and the bill went down to $450. Pool, CAC. I have about 3,500 sqft, but That includes the basement and there is no CAC in the basement.
In my old house we rented my bills were CRAZY.
Balanced billing is AWESOME!!!

Our recent bill, for the previous 73 days, is just under $71. We have CAC 24/7, and a 3000 s/f house.
Oh, yeah... did I mention that I LOVE my solar panels?.....

I would walk outside and make sure your meter was read correctly. That seems really high.
Balanced billing makes no difference. You are still paying the same amount of money, you are just spreading it out.

Re: 1200$ electric bill for 2 months
That sounds VERY HIGH. I didn't see if you have a pool - bc with a pool, then that can be correct. That's my sisters Electric bill bi-monthly. She has an inground heated pool
Ours was $500 for 2 mos. I work from home and C/A is on 24/7 During the day set to 74 and at night 72 sometimes 71 (DH is always hot)
We have a 4 bdrm dormered cape.
That sounds really high. Check your meter and be sure it's right. If it is, start checking ur appliances - are they older an not energy efficient?
