Re: SPINOFF to Bloomberg's Breastfeeding initiative

My PED and obgyn said the same thing the doc in the article says. BM is so similar to formula , and in the end does it really matter ?

Well written article

I can't begin to explain how much I LOVE this article!

Honestly I feel like there is a reverse discrimination going on now with mother's who choose to give their babies formula and it's unbelievably unfair

I was just thinking this. Do any of these writers actually read the initiative, or do they just like to see their name in print?

eta: Initiative link

endorsements

I think we should all read what the actual initiative entails. The NY Post, Huffington Post, and now this article are all OPINION pieces, not facts. Their job is to sell papers or get hits on their website, so they're using poetic license to twist the point. Also keep in mind a few things:

1) It's an initiative, not a law.

2) Hospitals VOLUNTEERED for this.

3) Bloomberg is backing this, but it's a group effort. It's endorsed by the AAP and a bunch of other well-known groups with important acronyms.

4) No one is taking anyone's choices away. If you want to FF or need to, you'll be given formula. If you want to BF and supplement, someone might point out that it's not the best idea when trying to build a BM supply, but they'll still give you formula. If you want to BF, you'll get more support so that you're successful. It's a theoretical win-win for all... unless we spend another 14 pages bashing each other for making personal choices for our families.

Can't we all just get along?

Is this just for NYC? What about LI hospitals?

Well, the name of the initiative is Latch On NYC...

Currently, Stony Brook and Winthrop have "baby friendly" certifications. It's a similar point of view that, like Latch On, tries to support families and follows AAP and WHO recommendations. 24-hour rooming-in is encouraged, but not mandated, esp after difficult deliveries or c-sections. BFing is supported by LCs on staff, but not forced. Formula samples are not given out, though if you choose to FF, it will be provided for you.
