Spinoff to getting rid of the bottle.

Ok someone explain to be getting rid of the whole bottle thing-- DD just turned 1 last week.

She has no problem drinking water from her sippy/straw cup all day long. But when it comes to her naps & bedtime, she likes drinking her bottle and falling asleep (she doesnt fall asleep w. the bottle in her mouth its completly done & she'll throw it, turn over and then be knocked out)

Im a new mom & it may be a stupid ? but for her naps & bedtime how do I give her the milk w/o the bottle? I feel the bottle soothes her to sleep while shes laying down. Do you give her the sippy cup sitting up & then put them in the crib?? LOL Im so lost.

Re: Spinoff to getting rid of the bottle.

Im no help. My twins are 22 months and they still take a bottle the same exact way your daughter does. At this point Im just going to wait till I can explain to them and know they are understanding it. I've had some people tell me I should get them off of it and Ive had others tell me it's up to me.

I tried around 12 months and it was a NO GO. I mean she screamed and thrashed around like a crack addict going through withdrawals.
It was beyond God Awful.
I finally realized- you know what? She's not ready. And that's ok.
Having a bottle past 1 year old is not going to kill them.
So we waited.
And around 17 months I'd say- one day DH was watching her at home and I get home from work and he says- yeah I got her off the bottle!

I was shocked.
He said he just told her, no more bottles, you will have your milk in a cup today and she was fine with it.
IMO they need to be emotionally ready.
And for each kid it is different.
Don't sweat it- try again in a few months.
You might be surprised how easy they give it up when ready.
Now - she does drink a TON less milk than she used to when she took bottles. But the ped said that is ok. She loves cheese and yogurt too so she's getting the calcium.

Re: Spinoff to getting rid of the bottle.

Well, I've never let DS have the bottle in the crib so our situation is a little different. But I give him the sippy with milk while he's sitting with me on the couch and then take him in to his crib. Ideally, I'd like to get him to drink it in the high chair...

I would just try one day giving her the sippy in the high chair or somewhere else comfortable and then put her down. Maybe it'll work!

I gave him all his liquids in a sippy for a few days and then just threw out the bottles.
he had no bottles so not much of a choice.
it worked out pretty well.

Re: Spinoff to getting rid of the bottle.

We did it at 18 months. I think people see their kid turn 1 and think the have to make allthese changes , an you dont.
For us though the switch wasnt too bad bc DS never drank to fall asleep. His last bottle (last sippy even now) is 4or 5pm which is way beore his bedtime of 830. We started by switching 1 bottle at a time and it worked fine for us. DS is 26 months and still loves his milk

Spinoff to getting rid of the bottle.

At 14 mo, I took away the afternoon bottle, no milk at all during that. A week or so later I took away the morning bottle, sippy cup instead. At 15 mo we took away the night bottle, and he does not sleep nearly as well. We started a new nighttime routine then so it was all a part of that. He gets a milk sippy at night but barely drinks it.

I would start with not giving her the bottle in the crib and then move on from there. I never gave DS a bottle in the crib for him to drink so I think that made it easier.

We transitioned to no bottles slowly and by about 17 months he was off them completely. We started with milk in a sippy for his afternoon bottle, then his breakfast bottle 2 weeks later, then the night bottle 2 weeks after that.

Spinoff to getting rid of the bottle.

I got DD off bottles by 12 months. She drank her water from a sippy cup, but fought me on the milk a bit. Someone suggested soft spout cups. She took to them right away. Of course I went out and bought a ton and then a week later she wanted her straw cups instead. So now she drinks strictly from straw cups. I also never gave her a bottle in her crib, so that might be something else affecting it. I was always told never to give a baby a bottle right before bed because the milk can sit on their teeth and rot them.
