Medical Records Question

How do I go about getting my medical records from my old RE? Am I able to swing by, sign the release form and pick up my files, or do they send them directly to my other doctor? My new RE asked me to bring them to my 1st appt, and I'm wondering how long it will take? My appt is in 2 weeks.

Re: Medical Records Question

When I went to 2nd opinions I called my dr.'s office ahead of time to let them know I'd be in to pick up the records. I wanted them to be prepared, etc. since my file is big. They told me when they would have it ready for me and I went to pick them up. They didn't give me the originals, but my dr went through all the relevant parts and photocopied them for me. Good luck!

p.s. some doctors charge for this kind of thing.

about how long did they say it would take for it to be ready for pick up? I just faxed over the release form this morning, and the nurse/receptionist did not specify that detail.

Re: Medical Records Question

Oh I'm on RE #4. Like everyone says, call them up and let them know you want copies of your records (they get this call all the time). If you had any tests like HSG, saline sonogram etc... you may want the films. You can get those direct from the radiologist (will save you time, reports are not good enough you want new RE to see the films etc...), unless your RE did them for you, specifically request a copy also from them. Usually it takes a week or two for the office staff to make the copies. I've had them mailed and I've picked them up. But, YOU want your copies directly. I have a huge bag of records. Hoping to destroy most of them soon.

To get my records, I had to fill out a form and then it took 2 weeks for them to be sent to the other dr. If your appt is in 2 weeks I'd call ASAP.

Re: Medical Records Question

it took the office about a week. Then I ran into the problem where the original office insisted they faxed them and the new office claimed they never received them . after a lot of back & forth, i picked them up myself and hand delivered them to the new office.

Re: Medical Records Question

Yeah, again I strongly suggest you get your own records and make another copy for new doctor.

Re: Medical Records Question

Some say 10 day but they vary. Get the records and make a copy to give to your new dr. Once that new dr gets them they can't release them to you or anyone. And the first re might only give a copy once. Some charge. I think I paid $9 from one dr.

Great idea, I was just going to look them over and hand them off.

They have them ready for me to pick Friday, so it was only about a weeks wait Chat Icon
