Our 2 year old wants to sleep in our bed....
I posted yesterday about some issues DD (23 months old) is having now that my mom (who DD is very close to) is in the hospital and cannot see DD for the nest few weeks (Link To Original Post)
One of the issues is that DD now wakes in the middle of the night and is hysterical.... she asks for me and wants to sleep in bed with me and DH. For the past few nights we have let her do it BUT I don't know if this is the right thing to do.
DD used to sleep in our bed and it took me months to break the habit. I have no problem with co-sleeping BUT I am pregnant with #2 and I want to make sure that DD is situated in her own bed before the baby comes.
I spoke to my pediatrician this morning who suggested that we keep DD out of our bed and in her own crib regardless of the issues she is dealing with. However, due to the circumstances involving my mom, I feel as if she needs to be close to us at night. What would you do?

Keep her in her crib.
I know it's hard, but it is such a hard habit to break once it gets going that I prefer not to start it up.
DD is almost 5,over the years we have occassionally let her sleep in our bed and it always takes us down a slipper slope that takes forever to break.
So, regardless of the reason, I say she sleeps in her own bed.

ITA with this. If you really feel she needs you, maybe one of you could sit with her in her room for a few minutes until she calms down?

I bed share with my children and believe in attachment parenting so I'm biased. How far along are you? I think you should do what you feel is right and natural, and not what society thinks is appropriate or acceptable. It sounds like your dd needs comfort right now, so I would let her sleep in your room temporarily, but it's what works best for your family.

I would keep her in her bed, but I would ask Grandma if DD could have something of hers to sleep with. Maybe a stuffed animal. Even if your mom doesn't have something, I would bring a stuffed animal to her, let her show it to DD through the hospital doors and have her ask DD to take care of it for her while she gets better. Hopefully that might comfort her at night knowing she has Grandma's special toy to keep her company.

Re: Our 2 year old wants to sleep in our bed....
I am dealing with issues with 3 year old too who for the past 6 months comes into our bed in the middle of the night. I wanted to put up a fight in the beginning when this all started but DH totally sabotaged me and now we're totally paying for it. IF I had a king size bed I might not mind so much but with a queen size, no one sleeps well. So my advice is nip it now while you can, because it only gets more and more difficult! I can't even imagine when I'm the size of a whale how this situation will be!!!! I am dreading just thinking about it!

I agree with this. As parents, we so often try to do what's right according to the books and society but you have to do what makes you feel right. It sounds like she needs some extra comfort. She may be starting to experience some fears now that her grandma is away. It's a tough one but personally, I would let her sleep in my bed.

Re: Our 2 year old wants to sleep in our bed....
We've gone through this with my almost 3 year old since March when we converted him to a bed. He started to have nightmares & waking in the middle of the night but wanders right to our room. I let him sleep with us when he comes in bc we all get sleep.then. our house rule is as long as the kids fall asleep in their beds & sleep a portion of the night in there bed, they can wake-up in mommy's bed. I know we will eventually have to stop but like everything, I treasure this time snuggling with them.

I also totally agree. It's a nasty habit to break once your normal life returns. It's tough now, but you'll be thanking yourself later one.

DON'T DO IT!!! You will be creating a MUCH harder habit to break once your mom gets out of the hospital. Keep her in the crib.

Our 2 year old wants to sleep in our bed....
what do YOU want? do you mind possibly creating a habit? can you sleep well with a toddler next to you?if not, are you then willing to give up some sleep? i think it is a personal thing. there are people who don't mind this at all and that is fine. and then there are people like me who could NEVER ever get a good night's sleep with children in bed. it's just a personal choice. i have a 5yr old and a 3yr old and DH and i have yet to have spent a night in bed with them. i did this to my parents as a child and made them miserable. if you don't think you want to start something like that then i would not do it.

you could move a crib or toddler bed into your room.......
but keep them out of the bed, they are still to young to be rolled over onto, it only takes 1 time.

Re: Our 2 year old wants to sleep in our bed....
My dh has been traveling over seas and it really takes a toll on my kids. They need extra comfort right now. What we did is moved them into the master bedroom. My ds is on a mattress on the floor and dd is in bed with me. I work until 2am so the kids sleep on their own 8pm-2am and then i am in the room 2am until they wake. It is not the ideal situation but it works for us. Not sure what will happen when dh gets home but it helps me keep my sanity while he is away and gives the kids the extra support they need.

Our 2 year old wants to sleep in our bed....
My DH works nights. We have 3 right now and sometimes all 3 are in bed with me when I wake up! It was never something I intended to do, just developed over time. My oldest is the toughest. She's 5 and has nightmares and has always been mushy. My 2 yo starts in his crib which is in our room right now and only occasionally ends up in bed. The baby is 3 mos and I nurse so sometimes she's in bed too. It get crowded, lol, but I can't sleep if they were in other rooms, especially since I'm alone at night with them. On the weekends when DH is home, everyone stays in their beds/cribs. Its what works for us.
Like others have said, you do what is right for you. What works for one family or child doesn't for another. Do what you think is right and don't worry about what others say.

I agree.
I'm having this issue right now & my son is turning 4 next month. its not every night, but lately, he has been waking up to pee & then climbing right into our bed. I dont mind, but my husband gets upset. I just think that in 15 years when he is out driving at night, I will be wishing I had him safe in our bed!

Re: Our 2 year old wants to sleep in our bed....
Keep her in her room, in her bed.
Do you have a rocker or something you can sit with her in and just stay w/ her for awhile until she falls back to sleep or at least calms down?
If you don't MIND, that's one thing - but it sounds like it's not something you want to do - and if that's the case, Don't do it !!
When we went on vacation in March, my Mom watched the boys and laid w/ my 3 year old until he fell asleep every night - and I've been stuck doing that every single night since then - and I can't break the habit - and this used to be a kid that waltzed into his room, into bed and just passed out when it was his bedtime - no problems at all. Habits are very very easily established !

I agree. This is going to be a very personal decision for you and you have to go with what feels right to you. For me, I'm a softy, attachment parent, and not ashamed by it, nor do I say it's necessary and for everyone. My younger daughter is in a phase where she wakes up screaming every night around 3ish, and I take her in my bed. We all sleep great then. My older one went through a similar phase, but now she isn't coming into our bed during the night. They both still love sleeping in our bed, and we have 2 nights a week where they are allowed to sleep in our bed all night. They ask what days it is, and are super excited on those days. It works for us...
