Metformin vs. insulin
So i am 35 weeks and my fasting numbers are going up...medication was recommended yesterday at my doctor and these were the choices given to me. After doing research, I am leaning towards insulin...but dread the injections. What did your dr recommend to you and why?

Re: Metformin vs. insulin
My Dr never mentioned metformin. They suggested glyburide but I tried that the last time I had Gd and I ended up on insulin. After glyburide they recommended insulin. I think I heard that its protocol to offer an oral medication before insulin. My ob really wanted me on insulin because it is the "gold standard" for diabetes. I chose to go straight to insulin because it worked for me before. The injections aren't that bad if you follow the directions. They're actually less painful than the finger prick.

Re: Metformin vs. insulin
I was on Metformin before and throughout my entire first pregnancy and so far before and during this pregnancy as well. Did your dr say which one he/she thought would be more effective for you?

Re: Metformin vs. insulin
i as well was started on glyburide. I tended to have major sugar swings, adn they put me on insulin. For me, id rather be on insulin than orals. I have much tighter control this way, and dont have the swings. I also noted that i can eat a little more freely on insulin. everyone is different, and oral is easier, but for me, i wouldnt try it again, adn if i have gd with future pregnancies, theniwill go straight to insulin if need be.

Re: Metformin vs. insulin
Thank you for the responses. I found some research that laid out Oral treatment vs. Insulin from the university of texas and I am still talking to people...it seems 50-50%. I am weary of the metformin because it crosses the placenta, where the insulin does not.

This is why I got off Metformin at 12 weeks and went to insulin when I needed it at the very end (only 4 units at bed time from 32 weeks). Shots didn't bother me and I asked my peri flat out Would you take oral meds? And she send no. I said insulin it is then!
