Are you buying diapers in advance?

I got an e-mail from BRU about their diaper sale this weekend. I'm not due until January; but I'm tempted to get at least 2 boxes to stock up and hold on to.

I know it's hard to tell what size the baby will be in at birth; but I'm thinking at some point they'll be using size 1 so if I have 2 boxes of that already it will save me from having to run out constantly getting diapers.

Re: Are you buying diapers in advance?

I totally get what you are saying, I am such a planner and preparer. My logic is that I'm going to need them anyway, so if I could get them on sale why the heck not?! Of course, it helps if you have the room to store them! Chat Icon

I really don't have room to store extra diapers, but even if I did I don't think I would stock up on that many. With DS he would leak through huggies, break out in a rash from luvs, and only pampers cruisers worked on him. It was kind of a trial an error for him.

We bought one very large box (like from the bulk stores) of newborn, one of size one and one of baby wipes. That way we had at least 1 box ready to go. We received a bunch of newborn diapers at the shower (it probably wont be enough but we certainly have enough in the house for now, and when we start changing diapers and assessing- we'll know how many more we need to run out and buy). i think we are set on baby wipes for awhile (between our large box and many of the other newborn diapers we received included a box of wipes)... and obviously we will need more in all of the other sizes, but I guess we will buy those as we go along.

Having a few boxes at home is a good idea. I wouldn't go crazy and buy tons and tons in all sizes, though. We started with the ones the hospital used -- the pampers swaddlers (the giant boxes are the ones that have the wetness indicator line on them -- smaller packages do not; also the huggies little snugglers in the big boxes have the wetness indicators). But we quickly realized that we were having a lot of leaks and also that DD was getting a rash from the pampers. So we switched to Huggies and found they work best for us. I've also tried small packages of a lot of different brands, as well as samples of costco (kirkland) diapers which I liked. But we always go back to Huggies now.

I didn't have any nb diapers at home and that was a mistake! A friend left a box on my porch for me while I was at the hospital and I needed 2 more boxes of them, DD was small and lost weight her first week! But after that we went to 1s.

I may buy in advance but probably wait until I get a little closer (I'm due in February). If you're on the fence wait it out a little but, I am sure they'll have sales again.

I would just be concerned about what some of the other ladies have said about certain diapers not working for their LOs and then having a huge stockpile of something that you can't use.

I am not. There are sales like this often. A few months ago I thought about doing it but friends of mine said not to, even the larger sizes because we don't know which diapers will work best for our LO.

Re: Are you buying diapers in advance?

I did but only bought a few of each stage. Def did not go crazy. I thought that I would get tons for my shower but I only ended up getting 1 package of newborn swaddlers. I decided to just take back some returns and keep the $$$ on a gift card so we can use that to stock up on diapers when we know what size DC is and what works best for him/her.

Same here. I'm getting the Pampers Swaddlers bc they're nice and soft for the newborns but will definitely switch to Huggies later on.

Re: Are you buying diapers in advance?

I wouldn't. Diapers fit each kid differently in my experience. Some of my kids leaked with say Pampers but didn't with Huggies. Other fit better into Luvs..you don't want to buy them and then find out you spent money of something that won't work for your kid.

Same. I also highly recommend taking diapers from the hospital.

Re: Are you buying diapers in advance?

I received the same email. I am tempted.

I looked up the pricing of the diapers I'd buy and calcualted it (with a store credit I have) and it works out to be $25/box versus $47/box.

But (1) we dont really have the room for diapers and (2) we're closing on a house next month, so I can't justify too many "unnecessary" purchases. DH would say, "Baby isn't here now, we don't need them now" Chat Icon

crashing here....just wanted to give you something that i learned the hard way...ds was 9lbs and my mother bought for me the large box of newborns and he never made it through 1/2 the box...too small. i would wait till you get closer..if your sono is indicating a larger baby you may want to stock up on size one.

Agreed! DS was 9 1/2 lbs and we brought home diapers from the hospital (not TONS, but probably about 15-20) and he outgrew them before we finished them.

I had registered for diapers, but only rec'd 1 box and they were a size 1

i was told not to buy too many newborn diapers since they grow out of them quickly... my cousin has some left over that she will be giving me that she hasn't used but i think other than that i'll probably just buy size 1
