Avoiding OHSS?

So I went for monitoring and I have 16 measurable follicles plus a bunch of smaller ones...they said for prevention of OHSS I should avoid salt & simple carbs, drink fluids (gatorade) and start eating more protein...Is there anything else I can do?

I was reading that I should have salty foods after the ER and these were some other tips...What do you think?

• You need lots of sodium intake because this will help draw the fluid back into your veins where it belongs.
• Drink plenty of liquids to not get dehydrated. (Gatorade/sports drinks – for electrolytes and sodium, tomato juice – sodium)
• Eat salty foods – my favorites were chicken noodle soup, saltines, country ham biscuit, gravy biscuit
• Drink Pedialite for lots of electrolytes
• Take Tylenol
• Use a heating pad on your stomach (this seemed to help me with pain and discomfort)
• You can probably only sleep on your back. Use more pillows than normal. Stay propped up to keep the fluid at bay.
• See if someone can be with you at all times.
• No lifting
• Stay in contact with your doctor!

The way it was explained to me was that salty foods are only if you have full blown ohss. You should avoid salty foods right now because it can contribute to further bloating. Stick to gatorade, and ask your doc about it. Gl!

Avoiding OHSS?

none of these things will help avoid OHSS, theres really nothing you can do to avoid it. if you have high e2 (the more mature follies, the higher e2) your chances for OHSS increase. if your e2 is very high they might do a lupron trigger instead of HCG (only if you havent been using lupron as part of your current meds) since the presence of HCG can increase the chances of OHSS (which means that if you end up with OHSS post-ER, it can flare up with a BFP due to the increasing HCG). drinking electrolytes and the salty foods stuff all of those tips will help minimize bloating and pain if you have OHSS but i dont think it will do anything to avoid it altogether. another tip if you get OHSS is to eat small meals, large meals will hurt a lot and make you feel terrible!!

good luck!

I had OHSS 3 times will all 3 IVF cycles. There is nothing you can do to avoid it...

NO SALTY FOODS that IMO and experience makes it worse.

Measure your input and output of fluids to make sure your not retaining much (they will give you a measuring canister)
I would stick to 8 glasses of water/day, stay in bed, relax and take tylenol. Ask them for Dostinex if your concerned or if they think you'll need it.

It doesnt matter how many follies you have or how many eggs were retrieved you can still get OHSS with 6, 16 or 26...some wont get it at all...

My one GF had 8 follies and got OHSS
My other GF had 32+ and nothing...

Same as what everyone has said! Avoid salty foods before and after- I was told high protein, low sodium, and low carb diet. Your dr can give you a lupron shot as a trigger instead of the hcg if you are at high risk for ohss.

Re: Avoiding OHSS?

I think it is impossible to avoid - like the PP said if your E2 levels are too high, you are at a greater risk of getting it. My dr recommends a bland diet of small frequent meals and to avoid food high in salt or water content. They also recommend that you increase your fluid intake to 1 liter of water per day.

Last time, I had the mildest OHSS - I was uncomfortably bloated for one day and my E2 levels were 5000+ so I was expecting the worst. This time they immediately dropped my Gonal F after my first monitoring appointment - so I hope that is helping. I will get my Day 7 E2 levels later on today.

ETA: The put me on Dostinex after my ER.

They dropped my gonal-f after the first monitoring appt. too since my e2 level was getting high...I had a monitoring appt today and she expects to drop my gonal again.

Sounds exactly like me last time. Only they dropped me after my second appointment and then I had to be monitored every day of the cycle. Your are on day 6 of cycling right? What are you E2 levels now?

I think it is the luck of the draw. Some people with lower E2 levels than me have gotten OHSS way worse than me - so who knows.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you that you do not get OHSS.
