If you have guests over, would you prefer dessert, wine or a toy gift for your child?
DH almost always takes a bottle of wine. I prefer to take a dessert. I think families may want a toy gift?
What do you usually give?
What do you prefer to receive?

I think it depends on why the guests are coming over. If they are coming to visit my newborn then a toy is nice. If they are coming over for dinner I personally would like wine. I think any gift is a nice gesture when visiting.

It would depend upon why the guest was invited. If it was a birthday party, then a toy, if it was for a dinner party, then either dessert or wine. We are not really big drinkers so I would serve the wine for them and not us.

I always ask the host what they prefer. Most of the time the answer is some form of dessert.
ETA: As to what I prefer to receive, dessert or an appetizer, usually. For a BIG party (which we don't have many of), wine or beer is just fine.
