Anyone have paneling removed from walls?

Did you do it yourself or call a pro? We have paneling on the walls on one of our bedrooms and it looks dreadful. Chat Icon

Re: Anyone have paneling removed from walls?

Our contractor took the paneling down. The wall behind the panels was damaged so it's a good thing we had a pro do it.

My husband did it himself. Ours wasn't completely nailed down either. Good luck!

my dad did it at my parent's house. Taking down is probably easier but then you have to sheetrock the room after.

I did it myself. Did you try to pry a panel loose to see if its glued on or nailed? I was lucky that the paneling was nailed on and the sheetrock underneath was in very good condition with no damage.

Re: Anyone have paneling removed from walls?

I pulled a ton of it off myself, the walls underneath were a MESS of glue and nails. But I was just glad to get rid of it, and the painter we hired was able to fix all the wall issues with plaster/skim coating. We didn't need to re-sheetrock anything, and pulling it down myself saved a few days of $$labor costs.

We had paneling removed from a wall of our den when we moved in (the other walls had a lot of doors, windows, etc., so our painter skim coated over the paneling rather than remove it, and it has held up so well over the past 3.5 years). The guy who was doing all of the painting (wallpaper removal, etc.) at our house at the time removed the paneling and had someone sheetrock the wall.

The cost was minimal, (it was rolled into the cost of all the other work we are having done, so I don't remember exactly what it was), and imo, totally worth having a pro do it. It was quick work to have done and the wall looks perfect.

We removed all the paneling that was on the walls on our lower level. In one room, the sheetrock underneath was a mess of glue and nails, etc. so we ended up removing the sheetrock as well and putting new sheetrock up. In the other room, the walls underneath weren't too bad and we had someone come in and skim coat the walls so we could just paint.

My hubby did it, & then sanded the wallpaper underneath it down. (yes, 2 layers of wallpaper). Looks fine now.

We had ours removed professionally. Walls were damaged underneath.

Re: Anyone have paneling removed from walls?

In a few of the rooms the paneling was glued and nailed, which totally destroyed our sheetrock so it had to be replaced. Since at the time we couldnt afford to replace more sheetrock, we just painted the paneling.

Re: Anyone have paneling removed from walls?

When we bought our house, the master bedroom had one wall of paneling, the kitchen and the hallway had paneling. My husband and I took it down ourselves. In the master bedroom, we gutted the entire room and put up new sheetrock. In the kitchen, I re-wallpapered the walls because I knew we didn't have the money to gut the kitchen yet. As for the hallway, we kept up the paneling and painted over it. Luckily the paneling was a light color and I had success painting it.

our basement had paneling, we took it off ourselves but it was fairly easy to do since it was nailed on... we only replaced a few of the studs underneath since most seemed to be in good shape, and had sheetrock guys come in.
