Is anyone going to plan their own shower?

DH & I discussed planning the shower ourselves...my sister lives out of state so she can only do but so much. My mother unfortunately does not like to throw anything so she won't be hosting it. My best friend can't really do it on her own; and I don't have too many other close girlfriends that could help. My SIL threw my bridal shower but she's not working and we just don't want to inconvenience anyone.

DH and I are throwing our own coed shower. We have a similar situation as you. My mom passed away and his mom lives out of state and can't really afford it any way. And I'm not close with my sister. So we're just going to have a casual barbecue and invite our closest friends and family to celebrate our baby with us. I don't plan to make too much like a traditional shower though. No games or anything unless someone else decides to plan them and thats fine. And we won't make a big deal out of opening gifts since we assume the male guests won't be interested. DH wil probably hand out cigars to the men who want them and they can all hang out together while I open gifts with the female guests.

Re: Is anyone going to plan their own shower?

We were going to throw our own shower, I dont have a Mom or a sister but my MIL stepped in a insisted on it. I actually tried telling her no b/c she is saving for retirement and I didnt want the added expense on her. Anyway what we compromised on was she pd for the venue and I did everything else( decorations, favors, candy buffet, the cake, bib decorating station, etc, etc).

I understand how you feel and think its perfectly acceptable for you guys to do it. IDK when your due but you could do a backyard BBQ, thats what we were going to do.

I am! my mom isn't very much into it so she's helping out as much as she can, as is my MIL. I love planning these things!

I'm helping my mom amd MIL with details and stuff. They have too much going on so I didn't want to burden them with everything.

Re: Is anyone going to plan their own shower?

My mom is technically throwing my shower, but I let her know from the beginning that I want to be involved. I'd also like to pay for it, but she's saying no way to that. We'll see.

I'm a control freak and like things planned a certain way. My family knows this about me and loves me anyway. Chat Icon I'll be picking out invitations and weighing in on centerpieces, favors etc. Try to stop me!

I did feel bad initially because my mom and sister had planned for my shower to be out at my sister's house, but I got involved and said no because my sister lives out east and most of our guest list is in Nassau, Connecticut, Queens and Manhattan and it seemed like too far to have everyone travel.

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with planning your own shower. It's not like anyone has to know who paid for it etc.

Re: Is anyone going to plan their own shower?

I did. For a few different reasons.

(1) my bridal shower was a horrible mess with who did/didn't want to participate/co-operate.

(2) I'm a control freak

(3) I didn't want to burden anyone else with the responsibility - my mom lives OOS, I have no sisters and while I do have some close friends, see above reasons.

I booked and paid for the location. I printed and mailed invites myself. My "aunt" insisted I put her as teh RSVP and she said she would handle the favors and games. That I was okay with. And it went fairly well.

Re: Is anyone going to plan their own shower?

I'm pretty much planning my shower. My mom doesn't really want me to have one and my sister and SIL aren't in the position to help out financially. They do want to help so I gave them little jobs to do but for the most part I'm planning my shower.

Dh is throwing my shower. My mom is upstate and his is out of state. We have a wonderful backyard, and he loves to bbq. So it is very homy and warm, and we wont have to travel. All the items will be here at the house, no worried for us. And yes he is planning it all by himself.. with minor imput from me..(he wont let me get too much in).

Re: Is anyone going to plan their own shower?

From the beginning I told DH not to expect a shower, we'd have to buy our own things. We dont' have a large family and some family is OOS. There is also a lot going on during the time the shower would be so I'm not really expecting a shower. Maybe we will have family over at the end of the summer but that's all I'm expecting.

Re: Is anyone going to plan their own shower?

Since this is my mom's first grandchild, she couldn't stand the idea of me not having a shower. So, even though she's in North Carolina she will be planning it. I will be helping her. At first I was upset having to plan my own shower but since I don't see my mom that much anymore I'm looking forward to something we can do together.

Re: Is anyone going to plan their own shower?

I planned my own shower because my mom doesnt believe in them and eeryone kept asking me if I was having one so i didnt think I was getting a surprise one.

I picked the date and the food. my SIL did simple but nice table settings and my mom picked the favors.

I dont think there is anything wrong with that.

I think this is what we decided on. I tried to get my Mom more involved; but it ended with her coming to me with every suggestion (place to have it) and I was doing all the calling. DH didn't want me to plan it myself; so now he's going to do it with his sister and get my sister (who is out of state) to help with invites and rsvp's.

Funny, DH and I were talking about this over the weekend and we decided that we were going to plan it. Nothing big or crazy just close friends and family. I don't want to inconvenience anyone.

If I had a big enough group of people that I'd want there then yeah - I'd throw my own so it was done the way I wanted it..... My mom stressed me out too much with dc #1 that I stopped the shower(which would have been 37 weeks - while dc was still in nicu)..... My mil threw me a sprinkle of 6 relatives which was nice but I missed not having a cake, and I had no friends at it.

I am not but I see nothing wrong with it at all. Everyone has different live's, schedules, etc. So why not? I was heavily involved with planning my bridal shower that I decided to take a back seat this time. Enjoy whatever you chose!
