Would it be insane to cruise alone with my kids?

We had to cancel our trip to Florida because of my DH surgery. I really feel like I need to get away. Would it be crazy to take my two boys on a cruise out of NY by myself? Both boys are old enough to be at camp for a couple of hours while I relax and get some sun. And then obviously I would spend the rest of the time with them and have early nights. I don't know if it would be great, or if I would want to throw myself overboard after a few days.

I really think this is a very personal choice. What are your kids like and what are your expectations? Cruiseline? Would you try to go to the dining room with them - or just do casual dinners at the buffet/room service/etc? If they don't like the kids activities will you be able to swim with both of them? Neither of mine are independent swimmers yet so I would need a second adult to take them both swimming. Keep them occupied? I know my girls are very active and for ME personally while they are very good little girls I am home alone with them all day and DH doesn't get home until they are in bed so I wouldn't be able to relax if I went alone with them. DD#1 loved the fun factory and DD#2 is excited to go this trip - but they would only go in for about an hour at a time - so she was only in maybe 3-4 hours total on sea days (1 in the morning, 1 after lunch and 1-1.5 after dinner- even less on port days - mostly just after dinner). Do you have a family member - grandparent/sibling/friend that you could take with you to help out? How many days were you thinking? A short cruise might be much easier than say a week long. Would you do shore excursions with them?

It would be a week long cruise to Bermuda, with 2 days at sea, 3 days in port, and 1 day at sea back. I would probably do the lass bottom boat ride and then just hang at the beach in Bermuda. There is a kids pool on the NCL Star so they could both swim together. Plus they would be grouped together in camp. I would probably do 1-2 specialty restaurants with them and keep the rest of our meals more simple. If I could have 2 hours a day of quiet time I think that would be enough.

Chat Icon You are brave! We are doing a Bermuda cruise 3 sea days and 3 days in Bermuda. I couldn't imagine going at it alone. NCL is pretty good with the kids -they were docked next to us last time and they have 1000+ kids on board - so it is probably a good choice.

My 9.5-year-old daughter would much rather be in the kids club than hanging out with me (brothers are in college and I work from home so I'm far from a novelty to her) so cruising alone with her is no problem.

I'd say if you have a verandah room so you don't get stuck inside a stateroom at 8pm, you know it's not going to be the most relaxing vacation you've ever had, and it doesn't scare you half to death, go for it!

From what I hear cruising with kids is awesome bc the kids LOVE the camp. I am not a huge fan of cruises but when DS is a little older (he's only 8 months) we plan on trying it for this reason. I say go for it, you will defiantly get your couple of hours tanning and relaxing while they play at the camp Chat Icon

I think the biggest issue would be the early nights, so if you're okay with that, go for it!!!

Bermuda is super-kid friendly, so I bet they will enjoy it. You are comfy taking both of them to the beach?

Definitely. I'm off in the summer, so it's often just me and them. I've even done amusement parks by myself.

I think it's nuts personally. No offense. I would be worried if I got sick or something, there is no other adult to keep them occupied.

Agreed. Not saying that YOU are nuts, but I couldn't ever do it because I'd go crazy with fears, like the above one.

I personally would not do it when the kids are young. I'm pretty sure your kids are a little older than mine but not by much.

I would do it if they were like 8 and 10.
