Induction or C-section?

I'm due June 5 - went for a dr. appt yesteday and the babies measuring about 8 lbs and Ive only been 1 cm dilated the passed 2 weeks. I was really hoping to go into labor on my own and deliver vaginally. I heard horror stories about inductions and think I just made myself so scared of them. My dr. says if we wait passed my due date (next Tuesday) he'll most likely be too big and I'll need a c-section.
I'm not too uncomfortable and work from home, so I don't mind waiting for the labor to happen naturally. He said if I wait passed Tuesday and want to try to deliver vaginally anyway, I can but it can cause damage sexually and may have issues controlling urination in the future. I'm going to Madonna today to make sure his measurings of the baby were accurate, and then back to my Dr. on Monday to discuss mine and DH's decision of waiting and c-section, or induction.

I think I'm leaning more towards induction but just curious what you ladies have to say and what you would do??

Re: Induction or C-section?

I really have no experience, but I think I would want to give the induction a shot before I went straight for a C-section.

Good luck!!!!

I would wait to see what happens... IMO C-Section would be an option only if necessary... also I don't know if those measurements are totally accurate. They told my cousin right before she gave birth that her baby was going to be 9 lbs. the baby ended up being 7 lb 13 oz... best of luck with everything!

Re: Induction or C-section?

I would really try to push to go naturally if possible. I went into labor on my own the day after my due date. In my case my DS was too big and i needed a csection (but he wound up being well over 10lbs!). Id be lying if i said my labor experience was fun but im glad i at least was able to try for a vaginal birth.

If you cannot deliver naturally then I agree with the PP since a C-section is considered surgery

Re: Induction or C-section?

I am sorry, and I don't mean to come off so blunt, but from what you have written, I am not a fan of your doctor. Why would you be damaged sexually? Why wouldn't you be able to deliver a 9 lb baby? There is no reason to induce or have a c-section from what you have written, and your doctor seems to be using scare tactics to get your baby out for some reason. Does he have a vacation coming up? Also those growth sonos are notorious for being wrong, so i wouldn't even give it any thought. Women deliver 10 lb babies, 11 lb babies vaginally, and have no problem holding their urine or having sex.

If it were me, I would wait for labor to happen naturally.

Here is an interesting little article if you are interested.

I'm sorry, but I have to agree. Growth sonos are notorious for being wrong and unless there was another reason (like high bp), I see no reason why you'd need an induction or c-section, especially if you're not that uncomfortable.

As far as the incontinence goes, hate to break it to you but my babies were on the smaller side (6lbs 15oz) and I still would leak when I sneezed in the beginning (sorry for the TMI). Kegels really helped with that.

I'm sorry, but this is insane to me....anyone can lose control of their bladder from giving birth or even just carying a baby!!! And cause damage SEXUALLY?!?! That is ridiculous! Sounds to me like he is trying to scare you into a c-section!

ETA: and I also agree with going for the induction over the c-section if need be. I was induced with both of my kids, the first was because my water broke and I didn't go into labor on my own. It was long, but not excessively long and most first births are long......From my own experience there is no reason to fear an induction.

. ITA! Uour dr seems to be pushing a csec on you. Csection is major surgrey and should be avoided if necessary. Sonos are way off! I was told the my dd was 8lbs4oz the day she was born and she only weighed 7lbs even. I would at least wait to your due date to make any decisions.

I agree! Can you fm the name of your dr. I think we have the same one. He convinced me to do an induction and I ended up with a cs, all because he was going on vacation. I'd wait it out a bit!

Re: Induction or C-section?

As someone that had both- if you can wait and go into labor on your own please wait. I was induced due to pre-e and after 36 hours of discomfort ended up getting an emergency c-section. Had I known that I would have asked for a c from the beginning.

As far as the growth sonos do not go by that. DS measured 8lbs 3oz on the Monday that I was induced. He was born that wedn and weighed 9lbs 4 oz. A whole lb off.

Best of luck to you- and it sounds like your doc is looking for the easiest way out for HIM not you. FM me if you have any questions.

He said I can TRY to deliver a 9 lbs baby vaginally but a lot of times it ends up being a c-section anyway. He said it doesn't necessarily matter the size of the baby when it comes to sexual or urination problems, but the risk does increase the baby gets larger. He did leave it completely up to me to make the decision, and he has delivered all of his patients babies himself. I do appreciate your advice I have heard horror stories too of Drs doing what is convenient for them - but I do trust my Dr. 100% and don't think that is his goal. I think he is just sharing his opinion, he did leave the decision up to me completely and will be there to deliver the baby either way.

I agree. Sounds like the doctor wants the baby out for his own reasons. Don't let him talk you into anything you are not comfortable with.

You have to do what you are comfortable with, but I have never heard of these issues happening for any other reason, then they just happen to some pregnant women, IE incontinence. Remember, a due date is an arbitrary number. Babies come when they are meant to be born. Two days overdue is nothing to be concerned over, and neither is a 9 lb baby.

ETS: There are also risks with induction and c-sections, and those risks are greater then chances of incontinence, so make sure you weigh those risks as well.

Re: Induction or C-section?

I am on my third pregnancy with Madonna. They were dead on with my dd and ds. They said he was 5.5lbs and ds was born 6.5lbs 2 weeks later. SO he gained his 0.5lbs a week. Same thing with dd. They were scary accurate.
I was induced with both kids since I have a clotting disorder I can't go past 39 weeks. Ds was induced 38w because he could not maintain his fluid. Dd was 38.5w because she was getting large and I had a lot of trouble getting ds out. So they were afraid to let me go the extra week.
Both inductions went great other then the epi failing with ds but that had nothing to do with the induction lol I had 2 vaginal births with with no fetal distress. I was terrified I would need a section since I have heard inductions can lead to them but I had no issues what so ever. I will be getting induced with this baby too if I don't go into labor before the deadline.

Re: Induction or C-section?

Just wanted to mention that i had a csection and my dr mentioned that i may have issues with urine leaking after. Luckily i did not but it seems like that is something that happens regardless of delivery method/babys size.

What she said.

Those growth sonos are notorious for being off. I'd get a second opinion from another doctor/midwife in a different practice before agreeing to anything. (No, it's not too late. I know two couples that switched at 38 and 39 weeks, respectively).

I'd definitely go for an induction before a c-section, but being induced isn't a walk in the park, either. Talk to someone else and see what they have to say.

I can tell you that I had a 9lb5oz baby and I have no problems sexually nor do I have any urination problems. I am very thrown off by his comments. I guess back in the day when c-sections were fairly non-existent there were a ton of women peeing their pants and no longer having sex based on his 'opinion.' I'm glad that you trust him 100% but those comments would make me halt like a deer in headlights.

I was induced with my son and I had a great experience - I was 3 cm when they started the Pitocin but it really was a great experience - I'm hoping for the same results with #2 but ya never know
