Hardwood floors...opinions please!
Thinking of ripping up carpet in our dining room and having the wood floors underneath refinished. But the dining room is next to the den where we have dark pergo floors. Question is do we try to match exactly even though it wont since the woods are different (fake wood next to real wood), or do we go with something completely different to make the distinction between the rooms and not try to match at all?

Hmmmmmmm I see the dilemma.
It will never match perfectly unless you decide to go over the wood with the same pergo... so I'd go different. Different shade of wood, maybe with inlay of darker wood (to match the color of the pergo) border around the room to tie them together somewhat.

When you say do an inlay around...do they just rip up part of the existing wood floor? I didnt know that was possible.

I think it would look cool, can you do a transition between them of a row of tile or something? That might look cool, or even a small area that blends the 2 colors with an inlay design like the prior poster suggested?
Like this transition but just 2 different colors? Edited to fix huge pic

Re: Hardwood floors...opinions please!
I wouldn't try to match it. I think it's fine to have different flooring in different rooms, even if the rooms are adjoining.
Think of it like when you have carpeting in upstairs bedrooms... you don't necessarily run the same color carpeting throughout the whole upstairs floor. You might have hall carpeting in one shade that leads to a kids' room in another shade. And it's fine to paint adjoining rooms different colors. So why stress about the flooring? Unless you have a completely open concept first floor, I think you want some distinction between rooms. And pergo and wood are different materials anyway. To me, that's no different than in my house where I have a ceramic tile entry foyer and kitchen, which connects to hardwood floors in the formal living and dining rooms (there's a saddle in the openings to the living and dining room to transition from wood to tile).
If your house is built in the 1950s/1960s, you probably have a medium toned oak flooring underneath the carpet. So I would maybe just have them refinished, but not stained, and keep that natural medium tone as a contrast to the dark pergo flooring in the den.

This is an inlay (not a great pic but best I could find)

They add different shade of wood around the room to tie the two rooms together.
One room has light wood, one dark - do a dark wood inlay around the light room to match...
