Question about bumpers

I know they're unsafe as long as the baby doesn't have the ability to turn his or her head, so we won't be using the bumper that comes with the bedding set we're registering for. But I was wondering if we should save it for when our baby is older and we convert her crib to a toddler bed. I was thinking I could cut one panel off to make it fit. Once a child is 2 or 3 is sleeping with a bumper still risky?

Also, at what age does it become safe for a child to sleep with blankets/stuffed animals in the crib?

Re: Question about bumpers

We never used them period, never found a need to.

As soon as you feel comfortable letting your child sleep with a pillow, blanket, or stuffed animal, they should be able to have the bumpers.

At 2-3 they should be fine with the bumpers.

Re: Question about bumpers

If they're 2 and still in a crib, they can use it as a step to climb out and escape. If they're in a toddler bed, it should be fine.

Good point, thanks. And DHs dad likes to tell us how DH used to climb out of his crib all the time when he was little so if our little girl is anything like him we will definitely not use the bumper until we convert the crib to a toddler bed. I think it will look cute like that.

Re: Question about bumpers

I used the breathable bumpers for DD because I was not comfortable using the ones that came with the bedding set (part of the reason why I am not getting a bedding set at all with DC #2 - such a waste of money but that is a completely different topic)
However, I did end up using them when DD started to chew on the top rails of her crib (someone on LIF told me to use them) and I tied the bedding bumpers to the top rails and she could no longer chew on the crib and it was a cute way to use them. DD is 2 and no longer chews on the crib (hasnt for months and months) but I still have the bumpers tied on the top because I think it looks cute.
