Car Seats as Luggage?
DH and I and the kids are going to Italy for over a month this summer. we are going to be fairly bogged down....two cases, a pack and play and two umbrella strollers. we were going to just get the car seats over there but the place where we're leasing the car wants over 8 Euro a day for each car seat and we're going to be there for over a month. can we check the car seats and do they count as luggage???we're only entitled to 4 bags..... would love to avoid paying the overage charge if possible!!!
ETA: we're flying air berlin to berlin. and then transferring on another air berlin flight to milan. i would need this to work on both legs.

Re: Car Seats as Luggage?
Wait, you had to buy at least one seat for M right? She can sit in her car seat in the plane and if the LO is a lap child you can gate check his car seat.
Tell your DH I said HI!

Re: Car Seats as Luggage?
I would call your airline, but we just flew American and we checked our car seat with the regular luggage (not gate checked) and there was no charge b/c it was a baby safety item. The best part was that we had purchased a large padded bag to put the seat it and we were able to put some of the overflow items from our suitcase into there so that we didn't need another bag.

Re: Car Seats as Luggage?
Its illegal to use US carseats in Europe, and while I don't think you will get arrested, if you have an accident your insurance will be invalidated. But you obviously will need to make up your own mind. When I go to the states, I always rent a car seat, they fit better as European cars do not have the latch system, so the seats don't have the right fixtures. My opinion is spend the money and rent the correct car seats, less to lug around also.
Eta...check with your car rental company because many rental companies cap the car seat rental at a certain amount, for instance when I travel to Florida even though its $12 a day to rent the seat, they can only charge us $72 for the whole time we have the car, its capped. Check that out.

really? never knew that. i have heard of a lot of people taking their car seats with them on international flights and then using them over there. hmmm... something to think about... thanks.
and i will check with the car rental place. perhaps they can work with us. we are leasing as opposed to renting (we're both EU passport holders so we were able to do that) as it works out much cheaper. essentially, we are getting a much larger car, a car that runs on diesel and full insurance for the same price as a small Ford Fiesta type car that runs on regular gas with no insurance.

i'm going to do it anyway. from what i could gather online, the european carseats have EU standards (i guess like a patent that is different from ours.) i also found online a lot of people posting that when you rent carseats, they are often dirty, gross and out of date and non-compliant. soem car rental places were renting carseats that were over 10 years old. we have no one to borrow seats from, the rental place wants a ridiculous amount for a seat that will most likely be crappy. i also do not feel like buying 2 seats that they will be out of the next time we go.
