Re: bathroom mirror vs. medicine cabinet
I think it's a personal preference. My answer would depend on the size of the bathroom, the storage in the bathroom, and what type of bath it is.
My upstairs hall bathroom doesn't have a medicine cabinet, and I don't miss it at all. It's a huge bathroom with a very long vanity (big enough for double sinks, though we just have one) with a ton of drawers and cabinets. There's a large flat mirror running the length of this vanity. But since there's ample storage in the vanity for toiletries and other types of items I'd keep in a medicine cabinet, it works. The bathroom was like this when I bought the house - we haven't renovated it - but if I did, I don't think I'd add a medicine cabinet, given the size and configuration of the bath.
On the other hand, our very small master bath does have a medicine cabinet, and I feel it is a plus in there. The vanity is tiny (only 19 inches) with very little storage, and there's not much counter space in there. So the medicine cabinet is handy.
I assume you are talking about a full bath, but I think you definitely don't need a medicine cabinet in a half bath.

Re: bathroom mirror vs. medicine cabinet
We don't have a medicine cabinet in our master or our downstairs powder room. I sort of wish we had one in the powder room because we have a pedestal sink and only a cabinet over the toilet, so there is a space issue. But I don't regret it at all in the master, we have plenty of storage in the vanity and I like the cleaner look of the pivot mirror we have.

Re: bathroom mirror vs. medicine cabinet
I have one in the upstairs bathroom bc thats like our "personal bathroom" so I have my floss, nail clippers - small items like that in there. The downstairs bathroom is really only used by guests so I dont see a need for one.
"They" say you shouldn't keep medicine in the medicine cabinet at all. It gets too warm and humid. you should keep it in a kitchen cabinet. Cooler / dryer place.

All 3 bathrooms have no medicine cabinets, just framed mirrors.

We don't have a medicine cabinet and it's our only bathroom. I like the way it looks way better with just a framed mirror.
We have a vanity with 2 drawers and cabinet under the sink. We also have a linen closet that we keep a shelf with all medicines, first aid things, etc.. They're all in Rubbermaid trays/bins to keep things organized.

Re: bathroom mirror vs. medicine cabinet
Our master bath only has a mirror and I wish I had a medicine cabinet. We have a double sink vanity with drawers and doors but certain things just don't fit in it properly. I wanted to buy one cabinet for each sink and then have the cabinet part in the wall so it basically looks just like a mirror but we couldn't because the stupid contractors ran ductwork and pipes in the wall where we'd need to put them. I wanted oval shaped mirror cabinet. They make many different shapes now that look just like mirror when the cabinet is sunken into the wall.

Re: bathroom mirror vs. medicine cabinet
We don't have one in our main bathroom. We have a large vanity with 8 drawers and an cabinet under the sink. So we have plenty of storage.

If youonly have one bathroom, I'd probably regret not having a medicine cabinet. Think abour what you keep in it now & where you would put it.
For me, I hate leaving toothbrushes & toothpaste ont he counter, so I would need to put them in a cabinet.
Depending on your layout, you can also get a solid door cabient on another wall, and have the flat mirror over the sink.

Re: bathroom mirror vs. medicine cabinet
We dont have one in either our full or 1/2 bath. The full bath doesnt bother me b/c there is a ton of storage. The 1/2 bath is a bit of a pain b/c there is no storage. We never use this bathroom so it isn't on my "to do" list yet.

Re: bathroom mirror vs. medicine cabinet
I went back and forth with this. I have a hall linen closet, a vanity with 4 drawers and under the sink storage... and also an above the toilet cabinet. Decided on a recessed medicine cabinet so it looks like a flushed mirror. So glad i did...bc all of the other space is pretty well used up!

Re: bathroom mirror vs. medicine cabinet
We just renovated our master and I now have a mirror only because I think it is a more up to date look than a medicine cabinet. I have a vanity with 6 drawers plus under sink storage. Two of the drawers are deep so you can fit tall bottles, hair dryer, etc. I am still not used to not having a medicine cabinet but I love the look of just a mirror.
