Is a Balcony Room on a Cruise.....

really worth it?

The cruise we are looking at is $500 more for a balcony than just an inside room.
We have been on 4 cruises:
1-small window
2-window
3-inside
4-window to inside of ship, not water

We are not smokers but thought it might be nice for breakfast in the morning. Do you use it at night too?

How long is the cruise? Where is it going? Do you spend any time in the room? Would you have drinks on your deck during sail away?

It really is a personal thing. I don't think I could do an inside because I worry I would get motion sickness. I eat all my breakfasts on our balcony. We have a glass of wine on our balcony every night. We often have a drink during sail away on our balcony. One of us sits on the the balcony while the other showers. I also like to sit outside and read a book where it is quiet after a busy day or a day by the pool. So for us - esp for $500 more than an inside I would go for it. But it is a personal thing. I have friends who never spend anytime in their room at all other to crash and shower - they want to party.

If you have children it is also nice because you can sit out there while they nap or if they go to bed early.

7 day cruise to the Caribbean. We spend some time in the room, not a lot. Mostly to sleep, shower, some time in between dinner and shows. We probably would be out on the deck at sail away, not in our room.

No kids this cruise Chat Icon

Thanks so much :)

Yes definitely. It's nice to get some fresh air and it makes the room seem bigger.

I will not cruise without one. Honestly once you experience the balcony, you won't look back. We spend pretty much all our time out there if we are in the room. On sea days where the pool is crowded, I veg on the balcony & catch some rays. We unwind at night on the balcony before turning in for the night.

Re: Is a Balcony Room on a Cruise.....

Yes, get a balcony. It's totally worth it for a week long cruise. There are times when you might not be able to find seats on the pool deck or you might want some peace and quiet while sunbathing/reading outside. The balcony is the perfect place for that.

I would highly recommend doing this and think it's totally worth the splurge 'cus it does make the room seem bigger.

If you think $500 is too much, you might want to call 2-3 weeks before sail date to upgrade when prices across the board come down. Or you can always upgrade on the ship. My bro did this on our last trip together and paid just $2-300 extra for the upgrade.

Well I would say go for it anyway - my feeling is that when there isn't a big difference between the inside and balcony I would go for it. However if you don't plan to spend anytime in your room, and the difference would mean that you wouldn't be able to afford to take a vacation for a long time then I would hold off. Otherwise esp with the Caribbean where it is warm enough to relax on it. It is so nice to sit quietly on there and relax with a cup of coffee or a drink. I find when you have the balcony you will want to spend a bit more time in the room. When we had window rooms in the past we missed the balcony and spent little time in the room. Warning once you have one it is hard to go back!

150% worth it. We will not cruise without one. We love coming back to the room at the end of the night and sitting on the balcony talking about the day and the days ahead. Also love waking up at sitting out there making plans for the day while having coffee.

we have always had balconies except for our New England/Canada Cruise and I will never do it again! I hated not being able to get some fresh air except to go on deck

Re: Is a Balcony Room on a Cruise.....

I really like it, and I think it's a HUGE difference from an inside stateroom. I really like being able to get fresh air and see the horizon to combat motion sickness.

We did a 5 night Bahamian cruise last month. I found I spent very little time on the balcony (I'm a very "on the go" vacationer) but I did like to have that fresh air. Also, I always wake up before DH, so it gave me somewhere to go. I liked watching us pull into ports in the early morning, etc.

Re: Is a Balcony Room on a Cruise.....

I wouldn't cruise without a balcony again. EVER. I do agree that you might not spend MUCH time on the balcony, but the time you do spend out there is worth it. The rooms are also larger than interior cabins- significantly so in my experience.

ETA: For instance, one day on our honeymoon cruise it rained the entire day. BOOOO! But we didn't care, we sat on our balcony reading and listening to the rain, enjoying the views. It was fantastic! We even did a little Chat Icon out there! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Is a Balcony Room on a Cruise.....

Last year, for our HM, DH & I went on a month long cruise throughout Europe. Thank GOD we had a balcony - you need one! Our room was huge since we had a suite, but its still nice to be able to sit out on your own private space in the middle of heaven and relax! You can still enjoy the deck whenever you want, but you can have breakfast in the morning or read a book and veg out and unwind after dinner before going to bed! Especially if there are no kids coming along on this cruise - do it! sooo worth!

Dh & I are going on a nother cruise this June to the Caribbean for our anniversary and since this cruise is only for 7 days, i suggested an oceanview instead of a balcony to save money. He agreed and I booked it. The next day he called me and told me he upgraded the room to a balcony as a suprise because he couldn't cruise without it!

Just think, you might even see dolphins while sipping on a fruity drink or at breakfast!

we did our first cruise with a window which i thought was fine. but then we got a balcony room on our 2nd cruise and i definitely thought it was so much better. we slept with the door open a few times, and it was soooo soothing to hear the waves. plus, it makes the room feel a lot bigger.

I will not cruise without one. Granted I am a bit claustrophopic and could never be in an inside cabin. But I still love, love my balconies. Coffee and sunrise on the balcony can not be beat!
Its also fun if you are on the side the ship docks on to see the last minute runners for the ship. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
