Anyone have any experience with Sensory Food Aversion?

If so, can you share what symptoms or characteristics drove this diagnosis? I am trying to figure out if I have a picky eater, who is getting her molars in and just doesn't want to try anything. Or if I have a bigger issue on my hands and need to seek some outside help.

DS does have sensory issues. Gagged on all foods and didn't really chew well. He didn't know how to move the food over with his tongue to his teeth. That's the first thing eating therapists look at.
He threw up a lot too and didn't really start eating regular table food till he was 2. He's almost 3 now and still has issues with food. I think now he's a picky eater mixed with the sensory issues. It's just become behavioral now
He eats pretty bland foods now. As his therapist says he eats to live. Food doesn't do it for him

Erica- when did your son get diagnosed?
My nephew is 9m and doesn't eat any solids yet. He gags on puffs and even Step 2 &3 foods that have pieces of pasta or rice. I'm wondering if it's just a stage/he needs to get used to it or if maybe there's something more.

(Sorry Robyn- don't mean to hijack Chat Icon)

I don't have knowledge about sensory issues but just wanted to share that my DD is pretty close in age I believe to your DD (15.5 months) and is EXACTLY the same way. She just had one molar come through finally (although the other 3 are not far behind) and has seemed much better eating since. Also I found if I gave her motrin for her teeth, it helped a lot with getting her to eat. She is still pretty picky too but I really think it is the age. She will have days where she refuses to eat hardly anything. She has her favorites and seems to only stick to those.
Also I had similar concerns bc my DD would only pick up certain foods and others she'd pick up but then fling. My ped said it didn't sound like a sensory issue or a motor issue since she would pick up a good amount of things, even if it was only waffles, bread, mac n cheese, etc.

Sorry I am no help but just wanted to say I can relate that this age is a rough one for eating...and molars definitely don't seem to be helping!

Good luck!

Not sure how old your dc is, but my ds gagged on anything that wasn't completely smooth. He just started eating table food this past week. He was 1 on the 31st. Now he's eating everything. Maybe just give it some thine. It was like a switch went off for my ds.

I know this is an old post, but wanted to bump it to see if anyone has more insight. My son is now 3 and has gotten increasingly worse with eating or not eating I should say! He is so picky and I'm at my wits end and starting to think there's a bigger issue here than a power struggle.

What does he eat? Does he gag when he eats certain foods? Toddlers do go through a phase where they stop eating or their eating habits change a lot

Re: Anyone have any experience with Sensory Food Aversion?

He loves fruit and nuts, he eats like a squirrel! Sometimes I can get him to eat a salad, chicken nuggets, a sandwich or pizza...sometimes. He used to love steak, but the past few times we tried to give it to him, he won't eat it. Most things need to be dipped in honey or he won't eat it. Tonight he got so worked up about eating that he threw up. He won't try anything else, he refuses and now we're at the point where he will ask for something and then not even take a bite.

Re: Anyone have any experience with Sensory Food Aversion?

That kind of sounds like what they call "Toddler Anorexia". It is a phase that they hit and it is a power struggle for them.. They are basically voicing their opinion on what they want to eat.

My son has a sensory processing disorder with severe oral aversions. He only ate table food from 9-13 months. He would gag and vomit on certain textured foods. I knew he had a problem. He was diagnosed at 22 months old.

Kids will go through stuff and to save your own sanity, don't push it. He won't starve.. Give him what he likes and if he refuses to eat it, then he is done until the nest meal or snack... That works with a lot of kids who don't have an actual issue with feeding.

Feeding therapy is hard to get. I fought all through early intervention with him. They denied him over and over. My insurance refused to pay it up until this past year. But I only found out about it recently. He started his first feeding therapy this past week..

I would give it a few weeks and see what happens. If it doesn't get better or gets worse, then I would seek help..

It's been an ongoing battle for over a year, but I was never worried he wasn't eating enough until recently. He got sick again in the middle of the night so I think this instance might of been a stomach bug or something.

Does he like smoothies / milkshakes ? You can gets lots of healthy nutrients into a smoothie and he might like the cold / silky texture.

Re: Anyone have any experience with Sensory Food Aversion?

He does like smoothies, I've been able to sneak zucchini and butternut squash in them successfully. My husband tried one with spinach, but he took one look at it and didn't like that it was green so didn't drink it! It's just so hard to eat anywhere but home especially when home is hard too Chat Icon I feel like the things I can get him to eat aren't going to bulk him up.

Re: Anyone have any experience with Sensory Food Aversion?

My son is 4 and barely weighs 32 pounds. His diet consists of yogurt (no bits), French Fries, grapes, milk, an occasional waffle, and pureed fruit. HE has always had problems with feeding. As long as he maintains his weight and doesn't lose anything, all the dr's and therapists say he is ok health wise.
I would try pediasure if you are worried about bulking him up. My son is allergic to it so he can't even have that. I worried about it for so many years that it drove me nuts.. I have learned to accept that he is ok...

If you want an evaluation, the place I go to has offices all over the island... I can message you the name.

. If he likes smoothies you have more options than you think. You can throw in all sorts of things that will bulk him up : coconut butter , nut butters, avocado , whole milk yogurt, chia seeds, hemp seeds. You can disguise so much in a smoothie ! If you google Garden of Life you can find very nutritious powders to add to smoothies. Also, if you want to use greens , but he doesn't like the color, add berries. That will make the mixture purple. If you want to get in some extra calories, you can always cook the things he likes in extra coconut oil or olive oil. Finally, google abc pudding. If he likes pudding and chocolate it is a great recipe to sneak in bananas and avocados. Good luck !

His doctor basically said the same, as long as he isn't losing weight. He is gaining, but not the average amount, he is way below the curve. I was and so was DH growing up so it shouldn't be a surprise. There are days I think eh, he's just picky and others where I panic and think it goes deeper. Regardless, I would love a recommendation, thank you!
