anyone else have high deductible insurance?
if i get pregnant this month my estimated due date would be january 8th....which hopefully i go early and have a 2012 baby bc otherwise it will cost be $16,000 to have this baby
i have to pay $8000 out of pocket this year (2012) which i will with all my infertility things i am going thru and doctors visits during pregnancy, plus all my dh's and dc's visits.
well if i have my baby january 2013 i start my deductible all over, and will pretty much have to pay the hospital bill out of pocket!
why the he!! do i have insurance????? dh works for a large company and this is the crap they give their employees, what a joke. the person who i spoke to on the phone about this pretty much laughed and said 'yes, it looks like it will cost you 16,000 to have a baby' UGHHHH! my doctor said this is the way insurance is starting to go in america, high deductible.
pray it works out for us this month bc we might be putting it on hold until winter now

Re: anyone else have high deductible insurance?
You have a high deductible to keep you monthly payments for insurance low.
Usually with a high deductible insurance you have a HSA account. Does your DH's employer contribute to that at all?
I had a high deductible insurance before the one I have now and the company I worked for contributed to our HSA so we didn't have as much out of pocket.

they raised the amount they take out of his checks....about $400 a month
and dont get me started on how much they contribute to the HSA....its based on last years salary. since dh had a good year they put NOTHING in the account. way to reward your employees for making you money basically the employees who make less get more money in their HSA. makes no sense for the sales people tho who are the ones making money for the company. can you tell how much i hate dh's company lol

Re: anyone else have high deductible insurance?
Granted I am out of state, but I gave birth to DD in January of 2011 and my ENTIRE hospital bill for the two of us was only $2800. It was $2400 if you paid within two weeks of receiving the bill.
We have a $3k deductible but ours starts on 12/1, not 1/1.
Anyway, a natural (vaginal) birth with no pain meds isn't that expensive. It certainly shouldn't be $16k. Sorry for crashing, but I wanted to let you know. HTH.

I'm not sure about the no meds..but a vaginal birth with an epi for my first DC cost around 19k, and for my second DC it cost around 20k.

No, it's not a typo. I have the bill in the other room if you want me to take a picture of it. It was $2,800.
I live in NC. Could it be that much less expensive here than in NY?? I guess anything is possible.
ETA: The bill from my OB was separate and was around $800 (total) but that included the entire 9 months of prenatal visits and the delivery. I ended up getting back some of that money since we prepaid it the year before DD was born, then met the deductible with the hospital bill and two sets of prescription meds in December.

this is out of pocket right? that sounds about right and thats about how much I wld have to pay under my plan.
ex: provider will charge insurance lets say $28,000 for labor and delivery but patient wld be resp for 10% or 20% after deductible is met.

chill it says "re-read" as in I re-read your post that was why I edited mine to say that in NY, it would cost more than 2800 even without epi.

We are in a similar boat, but our deductible is lower (3500). IVF this month with the possibility of birth next year . Oh well! Just part of life. Start socking away money into your HSA - that is what we are doing.
